Native American Outreach Specialist Job at BestCare Treatment Services
The Native American Outreach Coordinator will provide traditional social work outreach to chronically addicted Native Americans, the targeted population to serve, with a special emphasis on the homeless. This includes identifying individuals who would benefit from alcohol/drug, mental health, and case management services. The Native American Outreach Specialist will create strategies to identify and connect with this target population. The goal is to help the target population access treatment and abstain from or reduce alcohol consumption and public intoxication. The position includes but is not limited to direct interaction, referrals to treatment (includes IOP and residential), networking with and accessing community-based resources, and advocacy for these clients.
Essential Functions
1. Designs meaningful outreach/engagement strategies to the local Native American chronically addicted population
2. Goes out into the field/community with the goal of actually meeting and connecting with the target population
3. Attempts to engage this population to attend BestCare’s IOP/Day Treatment services and Residential Treatment services when appropriate
4. Provides case management services to members of this target population who engage in Day Treatment or show interest in seeking residential treatment. This includes making office visits, home visits, providing transportation, making telephone contact, assisting client to access additional community resources
5. Attends the weekly A/D Treatment Team meetings:
a. Provides an update on the Native American Outreach Program and outreach efforts and strategies
b. Staffs any cases who have been referred to IOP/Day Treatment and/or are pending referral to treatment (outpatient, IOP, or residential).
c. Closely coordinates client care with clinicians (treatment, case management, treatment planning).
6. Networks closely with the target population on an on-going basis while working on treatment engagement efforts. Visit with them frequently, monitor them throughout their participation in IOP/Day Treatment or when in residential treatment; provide transportation to residential treatment when appropriate. alcohol/drug outpatient treatment team on an on-going basis.
7. Assists the target population with additional sobriety activities such as cultural and Native American spiritual practices, or other sober activities.
Qualifications
Education, Certifications, Licensure
· HSD or equivalent is required
· Valid Oregon Driver’s License and appropriate auto insurance is required
· PSS or CRM certificate, or ability/commitment to attend/complete Intentional Peer Support training or Recovery Mentor training and become certified within the first 60 days of employment is required
Experience
· Familiarity with substance abusing population and Native American communities
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Ability to blend compassion for the chronically addicted with the ability and willingness to maintain healthy boundaries and assertiveness when appropriate
· Knowledge of alcohol and drug addiction and local resources for detoxification; community resources and recovery programs
· Ability to function and use good judgment in crisis situations
· Ability to work well with individuals from diverse backgrounds and effectively in a diverse, multi-cultural environment
· Ability to work independently and reliably, and also work collaboratively as a positive treatment team member
· Must have high level of collaboration skills and ability and willingness to get along with co-workers
· Must possess a willingness be comfortable going out proactively into the community to do outreach and engagement efforts
· Ability to use MS Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook), database, EMS system, Teams/virtual mtg platforms, and the internet.
· Strong interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills (oral and written)
· Bi-lingual in English/Native American (local Indigenous Tribes) a plus
If self-identified as being in recovery, must be in continuous recovery from substance use dependence with a minimum of 1 year of recovery (temporarily reduced from 2 years to 1 year)
Tools and Equipment Used
Must be able to operate office equipment such as laptop/computer, telephone, fan/scan/copy machine, and also safely operate a motor vehicle.
