Job Duties/Responsibilities:
- Evaluate steel material properties and develop machinery and processes using materials engineering principles to manufacture steel materials for use in Steel Dynamic’s Critical Sector Structural and Rail products (such as wide flange beams, American Standard Beams, Manufactured Housing Beams, H Piling, Channel sections, and steel rails for rail roads) that must meet specialized design and performance specifications while conducting metallurgical analysis in mill trials for new product development and process improvement
- Develop new steel material properties product plans and make detailed recommendations for steel material selection based on metallurgical process engineering design objectives, such as strength, weight, heat resistance, electrical conductivity, and cost, and modify properties of metal alloys, using thermal and mechanical treatment, as determined by such design objectives and recommendations
- Analyze steel material properties product failure data and laboratory test results to determine causes of problems, examine relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties, monitor steel material performance, evaluate steel material deterioration, and develop metallurgical process engineering solutions to remedy such problems
- Plan and implement laboratory operations to develop steel material and fabrication procedures that meet cost, product specification, and performance standards while evaluating technical specifications and economic factors relating to process and product design objectives
- Provide metallurgical processing engineering and technical guidance to Engineering Designers in the selection of casting and forgings, inclusive of material heat treat conditions and acceptance testing
- Draft metallurgical process engineering performance reports and requirements on the process and development of steel materials fabrication and conduct research on new steel metal properties, fabrication technologies, and manufacturing processes

A Bachelor’s Degree in Materials Engineering, Materials Science, or Similar Field of Study is required (a Foreign Educational Equivalent is acceptable).
- 24 months of experience as a Metallurgical Research Engineer or Materials Engineer.
- This position requires only little domestic travel.
