Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $65,000 - $75,000 (commensurate with qualifications)
UC Hastings College of the Law is home to a top-ranked health law program, which is coordinated by the UCSF/UC Hastings Consortium on Law, Science & Health Policy (“Consortium”), an interprofessional initiative of UCSF and UC Hastings College of the Law. At Hastings, the Consortium is home to several grant-funded initiatives addressing the medical-legal needs of older adults in California and beyond.
THE ROLE and RESPONSIBILITIES
The Medical-Legal Partnership Attorney (“MLP Attorney” or “Attorney”) provides support to three Consortium initiatives that seek to advance the health of diverse older people and people with disabilities through law. The Attorney will provide legal research, analysis, and coordination on the Dementia Care Aware- Medical-Legal Partnership Learning Collaborative (~70% time). The Attorney will also provide direct legal services to patient-clients in the Medical-Legal Partnership for Seniors Clinic (~20% time). The Attorney will also develop and deliver trainings to health and social care providers on legal needs of older adults through the San Francisco Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (~10% time).
The Attorney must have excellent legal research, analysis, and writing skills. They must be highly proficient in project management, possessing the organizational skills and judgment necessary to establish priorities and meet multiple deadlines. The ideal candidate will have substantial knowledge and/or experience in health, elder law, and/or estate planning. The Attorney will report directly to the Executive Director of the Consortium and indirectly coordinate with the Legal Director and Managing Attorney of the Medical-Legal Partnership for Seniors Clinic (MLPS). The incumbent will be appointed on an annual contract basis.
Typical duties and responsibilities consist of, but are not limited to, the following:
- Conduct research, outreach, and educational activities as directed by Executive Director for the Dementia Care Aware and GWEP programs.
- Represent MLPS clients in collaboration with the MLPS Legal Director and Managing Attorney;
- Clearly and concisely explain the law to legal and health provider audiences and the public in written and oral form;
- Provide status updates at weekly and monthly project meetings and proactively communicate needs and priorities across projects with team members;
- Assist in drafting and preparation of grant proposals, reports, and other publications relating to all three projects;
Other related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- JD degree (required);
- Admitted or eligible to practice law in California (required);
- Knowledge and experience in elder law;
- Experience providing legal representation to low-income older adults;
- Previous experience working with health care teams and/or within health care system context strongly preferred.
