Medical Laboratory Technician- Parasitology (Nights) Job at IDEXX
As a Medical Laboratory Technician in Parasitology at IDEXX, you will be a key contributor at one of the largest veterinary diagnostic companies in the world. You will perform laboratory testing that helps veterinarians diagnose and treat pets. What can you expect?
Our lab processes thousands of veterinary samples a night, which we receive from veterinary clinics across the US. What type of samples? Glad you asked! We receive blood, urine, and fecal samples; we accession them into our computer system, and then we run diagnostic tests on those samples. The results are then shared back to the Veterinarian, and they can then formulate a treatment plan if the animal is sick. You would be a crucial part of the process of helping to keep pets happy and healthy - how great is that?
This position is in our very busy Parasitology Department in our North Grafton, MA lab, and it's working on our overnight shift. To be clear - working in the Parasitology Department means working with fecal samples. We can learn quite a bit about the health of a pet from what's going on in Fluffy's litter box or Fido's spot in the backyard. In this role, you'll be assisting with the process of preparing the samples and getting them ready to go under the microscope for analysis. This position is fast-paced, busy, always interesting and a great opportunity for you to join our team on a temp basis, and be considered for a direct-hire by IDEXX.
Schedule:
This is a permanent, full-time position where you will be working 40 hours/week.
11:30pm-8:00am
Weekend Rotations are required.
The shifts and hours may vary slightly depending on business needs.
Reliable and dependable attendance is an essential function of the position.
What do you need to succeed?
Education
High School Diploma or equivalent experience required, 2, 3 or 4-year degree in Science-related field preferred.
We'd love to see Certification as a Veterinary Technician (RVT, LVT, CVT - Registered, Licensed or Certified through American Veterinary Medical Association accredited program-AVMA) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) (American Society of Clinical Pathology-ASCP), or military equivalent - but it's not required.
Required Skills and Abilities
Laboratory skills, with experience setting up, running and reading lab tests and operating lab instruments.
Attention to detail.
Organized with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Communication skills, both verbal and written.
Positive, can-do attitude.
Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) as appropriate.
Supervisory skills, if a lead position.
Personal computer skills, including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft Office.
Pay
These positions start at $22/hr or based on skillset
This position qualifies for $3/hr shift differential pay (on TOP OF regular hourly pay!)
Physical Demands
Extensive sitting, phone and computer use.
Capable of standing continuously for up to 2 hours.
Extend and reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers.
Occasionally required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel or crouch.
May be required to lift, move and carry up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Hearing acuity sufficient to effectively communicate with customers and Employees via telephone and in person.
Ability to communicate verbally on the phone and in person.
Fluency in the English language.
Extended hours may be required.
Work Environment
Laboratory environment with potential biohazards present.
Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and the use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards. A complete list of such chemicals is available from department supervision.
