SUMMARY:
The Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) is responsible for specimen processing and testing, which involves knowledge of the theory of testing and understanding of instrument operation. The MLT is responsible for a variety of functions necessary for quality assurance of testing performance, including troubleshooting, making decisions about test results and validity. Critical thinking and the ability to function independently are vital to this job.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Properly identifies patients and patinet samples.
  • Adequately processes specimens for testing using proper laboratory technique.
  • Using proper laboratory technique performs testing and results specimens in a timely manner adhering to required TATs.
  • Troubleshoots abnormal findings/results prior to release, as necessary to ensure accuracy.
  • Adequately documents all issues including the RB&V of critical values.
  • Performs all required and expected documentation, both in written and digital formats.
  • Performs day-to-day instrument and equipment maintenance as necessary.
  • Performs day-to-day kit, equipment, and/or instrumentation checks, as required.
  • Accommodates stat orders as requested.
  • Consistently reports stat results within 30 minutes.
  • Accurately performs, records, and interprets quality control.
  • Participate in the orientation and training of new employees in the department.
  • Maintains confidentiality of laboratory results according to established procedure.
  • Uses appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) when performing patient testing and specimen handling.
  • Reruns or troubleshoots abnormal findings/results prior to release.
  • Releases results in a timely manner, notifying appropriate personnel when unreasonable delays will occur.
  • Participates in proficiency testing in each department.
  • Properly disposes of waste materials.
  • Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and facility regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
  • Understands and adheres to compliance standards as they appear in the Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and Conflicts of Interest Policy.
  • Demonstrates age-specific skills as required by position.
  • Offers suggestions on ways to improve operations of department and reduce costs.
  • Attends all mandatory education programs.
  • Improves self-knowledge through voluntarily attending continuing education/certification classes.
  • Maintains required competency levels as identified in written exams, skills checklists, skills labs, annual safety and health requirements as well as service excellence education hours requirements.
  • Willing to cross-train in order to better assist co-workers and to provide maximum efficiency in department.
  • Volunteers/participates on hospital committees, functions, and department projects.
  • Manages resources effectively.
  • Reports equipment in need of repair in order to extend life of equipment.
  • Makes good use of time so as to not create needless overtime.
EDUCATION:
* Associate's Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology
CREDENTIALS:
* Medical Laboratory Tech from American Medical Technologies, ASCP Board of Certification, or American Association of Bioanalysts
OTHER INFORMATION:
* Current active Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) certification is required.
