Title: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)

Summary of Position

  • Under the general and direct supervision of the practice manager and clinical supervisor
  • Provides nursing care for patients seen in the office
  • Takes and records patients’ vital signs
  • May perform EKGs
  • Prepares exam rooms for use; including supply stocking and any sterilization/cleaning required between patients.
  • Assists physician/nurse practitioner with direct patient care
  • Utilizes automated scheduling system to schedule appointments
  • Triage calls for physician/nurse practitioner to include determining emergencies, identifying symptoms, using discretion for work-in appointments, prescription refill requests, lab/test results
  • Performs other diverse duties as requested or required

Qualifications

Education and Training

  • Credentials are normally associated with competence in this position include a high school diploma and training/certification from an accredited teaching establishment.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Must be detail oriented as well as proficient in multi-tasking.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience

  • One to two years work experience as a medical assistant in a physician office preferred.
  • Scribing experience for a physician is a plus!

Knowledge Requirements

  • Knowledge of medical terminology of diseases and treatment.
  • Medical assessment skills.
  • Knowledge of electronic medical records desirable.
  • Utilizing internet websites for review of cardiology and other health-related issues that pertain to the practice
  • Current policies and procedures of the practice
  • Communication/Mental Application
  • Must speak intelligently and in a professional manner – in person as well as on the telephone
  • Must be willing to work under direction and take instruction/correction as well as provide appropriate feedback
  • Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Must be able to reason and remember names and details of instructions
  • Must be able to organize workload to determine priority of duties
  • Must be able to work in office with stress factors of telephone calls, noise generated by computer printers/copiers, and talking
  • Must be alert, adaptable and flexible

Physical Demands

  • Ability to tolerate intermittent physical activity, including sitting, walking, standing, stooping, carrying, talking, seeing, bending, handling; has good color vision.
  • Must have sufficient freedom of total body movement in order to stand up and sit down at work station; be able to squat and/or stoop in order to lift at least 25 pounds.
  • Must have sufficient vision to be able to type on a computer.
  • Must have sufficient hearing ability to be able to answer telephone calls, understand patients and be able to respond to any audio alarms that go off unannounced within the practice.

Hazards

  • May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens when involved in direct patient care.
  • Exposure to various chemical agents typically used in an office setting

Job Tasks

  • Reviews charts at least one day prior to appointment to ensure test results, recent hospital procedures and other needed information is available.
  • Directs patients to exam rooms where vital signs are taken as well as information for the medical chart (e.g. historical medical data, current medications, surgeries, etc.)
  • Assists physician/nurse practitioner with exam when necessary/requested.
  • Provides patient education regarding procedures, medications, devices/medical equipment.
  • Schedules future appointments as well as procedures/tests/labs requested by physician/nurse practitioner.
  • Triage calls made to the office – appointment requests, prescription refills, test/lab results, devices, medical condition – some of these may be handled by office staff, some may need to be referred directly to the physician/nurse practitioner.
  • Appropriate documentation in medical chart.
  • Other duties as assigned by practice manager, clinical supervisor or physician owners.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $21.00 per hour
