Manufacturing Team Leader Job at Steelcase

We are hiring Manufacturing Team Leaders to join our facilities in the Grand Rapids area. Team Leaders manage a zone with 8-12 employees and are responsible for production, metrics, improving processes and effectively leading the team.

What You Will Be Doing:

Team Leaders (Zone Leaders) provide first line leadership for a team of production employees. Activities in their assigned zone may be production work controlled by a flow or pull system or general distribution/shipping work. Their primary objectives are establishing, maintaining and improving standardized work (to maintain flow at takt time), kanban supermarket systems (pull), or shipping processes. Zone Leaders support the three guiding principles of flow and pull, process discipline and a culture of improvement. Primary responsibilities include focus on cost, people, speed and quality. Zone Leaders are generally on the floor to provide support and quick response for problems questions, suggestions, training needs and providing catch-up and fill-in to help operators maintain takt. They are also responsible for maintaining and improving processes.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Must understand and be able to have a positive impact on standardized work, flow, pull and elimination of waste
  • Able to effectively use the standard Zone Leader tools appropriate for problem solving, process improvements, to recognize and set priorities regarding manpower and production schedule, and to train in operation and quality standards
  • Requires a thorough knowledge of the production requirements and responsibilities of the assigned zone
  • Must know parts, setups and procedures for completing the manufacturing process for the zone
  • Must be able to lead effective meetings
  • Must be a good leader, motivator and communicator with employees and supervisors
  • Understands and is able to implement and operate balance charts
  • Available to work on weekends and evening when required
  • Able to effectively improve individual performance through feedback delivery
  • Able to lift and carry 35-55 lbs. from floor to waist; lift 50lbs from waist to shoulders; and push / pull up to 15 lbs.

Preferred Skills and Competencies

  • Prior leadership experience in a manufacturing, retail, restaurant or other faced-paced, operations-based field
  • Two to three years of experience with Microsoft Office
