Position Title: Prevention Specialist - Bay City
Reports To: Unit Director/Prevention Coordinator
Job Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt (40 hrs./wk.)
Salary: $11.50-$14.00
Hours: Regularly scheduled hours (school year) Monday through Friday from 11:00 am – 7:00 pm. Schedule changes based on site location, school district hours, half days and no school day schedule, school breaks and summer. Flexibility to attend occasional events earlier or later in the day and/or weekends. Summer schedule can range between 7 am - 6 pm, not to exceed 40 hrs./wk. and depended on location.
Prevention Specialist: Role, Responsibilities, And Qualifications Role:
The Prevention Specialist participates on various and community-based committees and supports in the development and implementation of project policies and procedures. He/She coordinates, reviews, and elevates activities of the projects or programs and works cooperatively with other club units and collaborating agencies to fulfill the Boys and Girls Clubs of The Great Lakes Bay Region mission.
Responsibilities:
1. Acts independently; consistently exercise discretion and judgment in performing work while predominantly intellectual and varied in nature.
2. Assists with monitoring and oversight of project budget.
3. Assists with professional staff orientation and training.
4. Makes recommendations for purchase of supplies.
5. Participates in various and community-based communities.
6. Assists in the development and implantation of project policies and procedures. 7. Coordinates, reviews, and evaluates activities of the project or program.
8. Works cooperatively with club units and collaborating agencies.
9. Delivers prevention lectures, classes; oversees planning and implementation of healthy recreation leisure activities.
10. Coordinates with and reports to the funding source on a required basis.
11. Promotes program service to agencies, club units and community activities.
12. Participates in performance improvement activities.
13. Provides for the age-specific needs of the population served according to department standards, as evidenced by observation documentation and peer feedback.
Qualifications:
● Minimum of two years of experience in planning and implementing youth programs ● Knowledge of youth development
● Ability to motivate youth and manage behavior problems
● Ability to plan and implement quality programs for youth
● Ability to organize and supervise youth in a safe environment
This position at the Boys and Girls Club of the Great Lakes Bay Region requires at least a high school diploma, college degree, or higher experience with youth development.
This position, as a prevention specialist, at the boys and girls club also serves the youth ages 6-18.
To complete training, it is required to have 2,000 hours as full time, 120 hours education, and 120 hours direct service.
Once all of those hours are completed, there will be a test that has to be taken in order to be a certified Prevention Specialist.
LS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
o A minimum of two years of work experience in a Boys & Girls Club or similar organization planning and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of young people, or equivalent experience strong communication skills, both oral and written
o Ability to deal effectively with youth members, including discipline problems
o Working knowledge of budget and personnel control and management
o Demonstrated ability in working with young people, parents and community leader o Ability to assist with ensuring funding body requirements are met
The job duties of a prevention specialist involve working to educate at-risk youth about substance abuse and other high-risk activities. You plan and implement programs to help young people in the target demographic become aware of substance abuse issues and teach them how to make alternative lifestyle choices.
Here are some tasks that a prevention specialist has to implement substance abuse/use:
● Planned substance abuse prevention education, created developmentally and culturally appropriate service plans for program participants.
● Designed innovative preventive workshops for at-risk youth and teens focusing on alcohol and substance abuse.
● Provided and implemented a substance abuse curriculum in elementary, middle, and high schools. ● Facilitated with curriculum development for various mental health and substance abuse and prevention related topics.
● Coordinated and facilitated prevention targeting at decreasing substance abuse and substance-related offenses amongst adolescents and teenagers.

Pay: $11.50 - $14.00 per hour
