Generation Q is an LGBTQ+ Youth Drop in program for youth ages 13-21. In addition to our regular drop-in program, Generation Q offers robust training and outreach to the Queens community and beyond. This training includes cultural competency and policy training for DOE schools, best practices training for other non-profit and for-profit institutions, anti-bullying training for students, and parental training for parents.
The ideal candidate is experienced in public speaking and well-versed in LGBTQ+ issues. The LGBTQ+ Outreach Coordinator should be passionate about standing up for the rights of LGBTQ+ students, and compassionate to those who may still be learning best practices. A well-established knowledge of NYCDOE, as well as the neighborhoods of Queens, is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide staff and student workshops on LGBTQ+ awareness, inclusivity and anti-harassment/bullying to DOE staff (elementary, middle and high school) and students (middle and high school).
  • Facilitate training for elementary, middle and high school educators on best practices for supporting LGBTQ+ students in NYC schools.
  • Oversee and implement relevant training for organizations both within and outside of Queens Community House.
  • Collaborate with the Generation Q Director on the development of new workshop content
  • Provide additional support to school partners who request extra assistance with the implementation and enforcement of the DOE guidelines and best practices for supporting LGBTQ+ youth in schools.
  • Support designated school staff seeking to be the school experts on LGBTQ+ policies and practices.
  • Assist in the distribution of Generation Q’s Know Your Rights PSA and supplemental toolkit.
  • Collaborate with school-based gender and sexuality alliances (GSAs).
  • Support the facilitation of community-based youth programming and youth lead advocacy efforts. This work may include the creation of a youth outreach coalition or youth-led advocacy beyond the work in schools with students.
  • Build and maintain educational partnerships with 8 additional middle schools in Queens which will expand beyond the existing trainings to include both parent information sessions as well as a student workshop series in these 8 middle schools.
  • Facilitate workshops for NYCDOE students on acceptance, understanding and perspective seeking specifically around LGBTQ+ identities
  • Attend relevant membership organization meetings as needed which would include DOE meetings
  • Stay up to date on best facilitation practices and current information on LGBTQ+ policy and legislation
  • Maintain good relationships with constituents, including other LGBTQ+ services providers, other QCH programs, NYCDOE schools, elected officials, and other constituents as need be.
  • Pursue and foster robust and productive relationships with the Queens community.
  • Create surveys and collect data to determine impact and effectiveness of training.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Mental Health, Human Services, or related field preferred. Relevant life experience in organizing and working with youth accepted in lieu of degree.
  • Demonstrable knowledge in LGBTQ+ issues.
  • Knowledgeable in anti-racist practices.
  • Knowledgeable in trauma-informed practices
  • Strong public speaking and facilitation skills
  • Excellent computer skills with various programs and willingness to learn new ones.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate discretion.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, multi-tasking, and communication skills.
  • Experience in developing and conducting professional development training.

Salary: $21.97-$24.73
Schedule : 35 hours a week, plus one hour lunch break per day.
