GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Performs intermediate skilled technical work conducting chemical and bacteriological tests; does related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Chemist.

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms' length, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions, hazards, and atmospheric conditions. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

Conducting chemical and bacteriological tests to ensure compliance and conformity with requirements and regulations; preparing reports; maintaining files and records. Performs standard chemical and bacteriological tests on effluent for conformity to regulations. Conducts special tests called for by superiors or by State authorities. Analyzes test results; prepares records and reports. Recommends changes in chemical dosage or other treatment methods, as indicated by test results. Records test results on prepared forms and maintains records. Assists with purchasing reagents, chemicals, and supplies. Assists with reviewing and compiling data for reports; assists with report preparation. Cleans and sterilizes glassware and other laboratory equipment. Prepares and calibrates equipment and reagents. Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Some knowledge of chemical principles, terminology, techniques, equipment, and laboratory tests pertaining to analysis of water and wastewater samples; some knowledge of the processes and treatment stages involved in water and wastewater treatment; ability to use laboratory and related equipment and to compute and record test results; ability to plan work load to meet time requirements; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college with major course work in chemistry, biology, bacteriology, or related field and minimal experience in a water or wastewater laboratory to meet the position requirements.

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina
