Job Summary: The Lab Supervisor plans and coordinates all activities within a medical laboratory and maintains quality and timeliness of all laboratory operations within budgetary guidelines. This position is responsible for daily supervision of laboratory operations and testing activity for automated and manual test procedures on samples, participates in education and training activities and ensures compliance with all regulatory directives, policies, procedures and regulations. The Lab Supervisor will develop and operationalize the laboratory operational plan and monitor its impact on service, quality and cost.
Job Duties
- Plans and supervises laboratory operations to ensure accurate, high quality, appropriate, cost effective and timely service oriented test results to providers and patients.
- Ensures that tests are performed properly and results are verified before release for clinical analysis of blood and other body fluids, hematological testing and other tests as ordered for patient care.
- Performs quality control checks of instruments, solutions, and test results against established standards. Maintains quality assurance and proficiency testing as required by CLIA.
- Performs routine laboratory procedures such as accessioning specimens, sourcing samples, preparing solutions for testing, conducting analyzer's maintenance and calibrations, interpreting control values, ordering supplies, and performing bench work activities.
- Inventories laboratory supplies, collects data, prepares reports, answers correspondence, and compiles statistics as directed.
- Formulates, maintains and reviews lab procedures.
- Maintains and monitors Quality Control Programs, coordinates the preparation for all accreditation inspections, facilitates the inspection process, formulates corrective action as necessary, coordinates departmental equipment maintenance and provides on-site supervision when high complexity testing is performed by individuals.
- Represents the department and consults with medical personnel regarding patient testing, addresses issues through committee or taskforce meetings and acts as a liaison between management and staff and works with other departments to resolve problems.
- Acts to protect safety of staff and patients by providing safety inservices or information to staff by monitoring the department environment for safety hazards and by ensuring the department is in compliance with regulations for Hazard Communications, Infection Control, and other organizational and department safety policies.
- Supervises laboratory services, including workflow, administrative procedures, operations, and strategic planning to maintain an efficient laboratory environment.
- Ensures appropriate lab compliance with accrediting agency regulations.
- Develops and implements quality control procedures and ensures documentation complies and is up to date with guidelines.
- Establishes goals and schedules for the laboratory.
- Oversees laboratory safety policies, implements training, and monitors department for compliance.
- Coordinates laboratory administration; supervises and authorizes all purchasing expenditures for supplies and equipment; ensures that all required equipment is maintained and properly functioning.
- Supervisor duties include interviewing, selecting, and training employees, planning and directing work, appraising productivity and efficiency to recommend promotions or other changes in their status, handling complaints and grievances and administers discipline when necessary.
- Develops, implements, and updates the Laboratory Department's operational plan in keeping with the strategic plan of the medical group.
- Prepares and implements the Laboratory Department's routine and capital expense budgets.
- Ability to understand and perform complex procedures and techniques and work with complex instrumentation, to correctly interpret test results, to include identification and resolution of discrepancies required.
- Must meet state requirements, as required, in addition to CLIA requirements.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree - Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
- 15 years of technical laboratory experience required, with at least 10 years working in hematology and clinical chemistry.
- 10 years of experience in supervising clinical laboratory personnel and activities required.
- Knowledge of laboratory techniques.
- Experience documenting and following procedures/protocols.
- Knowledge of procedures, instruments in use, and quality control measures within the laboratory.
- Experience operating and maintaining laboratory equipment and conducting regular assessments to record the lab equipment's performance.
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment with established time constraints.
- Ability to maintain strict protocols of all confidential or sensitive information.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. Able to effectively communicate to team members and internal/external customers.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule to work early and evening shifts and possible weekends.
- Must be a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) by the ASCP.
- Certification as a Laboratory Technician or equivalent, per state regulations (ISCLT, NCA).
- Affiliation: NCA or ASCP or equivalent within 90 days of hire, preferred.
- Working knowledge of State, Federal or other regulatory laboratory requirements.
- Knowledge of automated lab systems and computers.
