The Laboratory Assistant/Phlebotomist serves as liaison between the laboratory and its customers in response to inquiries and problems. Researches, troubleshoots and resolves customer problems. Performs phlebotomy from all types of patients. Performs a wide variety of clerical duties. Reports to the Laboratory Manager.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

The duties listed below are examples of work typically performed by an employee in this position. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties which are not listed below. Marginal duties (shown in italics) are those which are least likely to be essential functions of this position.

1. Perform phlebotomy both by venipuncture and capillary puncture.

2. Perform specimen processing accurately and timely and being able to set priorities.

3. Pay attention to the telephone system by attending to them timely.

4. Complete work assigned and endorses pending during breaktime or end of work period.

5. Maintain standards in ER and other Nursing units in blood collection ,specimen processing and calling and/or faxing results

6. Respond to changes in work as necessary, continually uses time to departmental advantage.

7. Prepare hard copy reports including distribution to ordering locations.

8. Process specimens for send-out.

9. Perform urine drug collection according to established laboratory policies.

10. Summarize laboratory charges on a timely basis for the business office.

11. Review accuracy of laboratory tests orders.

12. File laboratory reports in a timely manner

13. Reports all incidents (i.e. mislabeling, improper specimen type, etc) according to the lab policy.

14. Able to meet/perform Laboratory Assistant/Phlebotomy Competency checklist.

15. Other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:

Knowledge and Ability:

Knowledge of

• And proficient in the use of computers;

• techniques and procedures to process specimen (receives, enters data in the computer and deliver to the lab);

• techniques and procedures to process specimen for send-out which include spinning the specimen and prepare ali"

• phlebotomy techniques for both venipunture and capillary puncture.

Ability to

• meet/perform Laboratory Assistant/Phlebotomy Competency checklist;

• create a positive interaction with customer;

• communicate positively with people of different cultures, values and beliefs;

• acknowledge customer concerns and takes corrective action;

• complete projects/assignments within projected time frames and expectations;

• perform job under the supervision of a supervisor, manager, director and guidance from technologist;

• perform daily maintenance of work area according to laboratory policies and procedures;

• maintain safe, orderly work area and work practices.

Experience and Training:

Any combination in training, education, and experience that would provide the knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is:

1. Education: Normally high school diploma or equivalent.

2. Experience: 1 - 3 years of applicable phlebotomy experience

3. Training/Certification/Licensure: Nevada Laboratory Assistant License

4. Continuing education as required by the Nevada Laboratory Assistant License

Pay: $15.00 - $18.00 per hour
