We are looking for applicants with amazing talent for organization and effective prioritizing for our Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Industrial Hygiene (IH) Laboratory Technician 3 to join our incredible IH laboratory team!

This position contributes to L&l's mission by serving a significant role with the responsibility of supporting a variety of operational needs for DOSH IH laboratory analytical services, in addition to supporting Industrial Hygienists statewide. As a member of the DOSH IH laboratory team, it provides program support for analytical services and field sampling equipment needed to analyze toxic substances that could adversely affect workers health.

A crucial piece of this role will be assisting our Chemists with receiving samples and chemicals, preparing sampling media, performing gravimetric analysis, assisting with chemical inventory, routing and shipping samples to outside laboratories and assisting with Industrial Hygiene customer support. It may even prepare or review laboratory reports, or assist other testing areas with sample preparation. Keen organization and decisive prioritizing are essential to be successful.

It will also perform regular maintenance and verification of laboratory systems including water purification, analytical balances, pipettes, thermometers, and refrigeration units while also assisting the Quality Assurance program with accurate record keeping of lab verifications.

All of this is done in our DOSH lab in Olympia with brand new, state-of-the-art laboratory in Tumwater scheduled to be completed later this year!!

Duties

Some of what you’ll do:


  • Receive field samples and hazardous chemicals, verify Chain of Custody and log samples into Lab Information Management System.
  • Bar tag, log, and store chemical standards and reagents.
  • Receive other lab deliveries and supplies as needed.
  • Ensure adequate stocks of various sampling media, pre-weigh and prepare filter media, and ship sampling media and supplies to the field.
  • Weigh filter samples using a calibrated microbalance and record weights in a gravimetric database.
  • Record calibration checks and environmental conditions, route samples to senior analysts for additional analyses, and prepare reports for completed gravimetric sample analyses.
  • Coordinate subcontracting of field samples analyzed by methods outside of the DOSH Laboratory.
  • Work directly with the Analytical and Quality Assurance Supervisors to ensure customer needs and timelines are met, in addition to accreditation requirements. (This work will increase during DOSH Laboratory move)
  • Verify calibration of thermometers and pipettes as well as environmental conditions of rooms, chemical, and sample storage locations.
  • Perform routine maintenance of deionizing water systems.
  • May be contacted 24/7 to conduct chemical analyses or provide other support functions during disaster or emergency recovery situations.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • Five years of chemical, clinical, public health or related laboratory experience including one year at a level equivalent to Laboratory Technician 1 or higher.*
  • College education involving major study in a laboratory science may be substituted, year for year, for the required general experience.
  • Completion of a course for laboratory assistants, approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, may be substituted for two years of the required general experience.

DESIRED:

  • Knowledge of:
    • laboratory principles, practices, and techniques such as those used in chemistry, microscopy, bacteriology, serology, hematology, parasitology, histology, immunology, tissue culture, clinical and pathological testing.
    • laboratory equipment maintenance, operation and calibration; laboratory supplies and reagents; report preparation and quality control.
  • Ability to:
    • use laboratory equipment and techniques; understand and follow complex written and oral instructions, formulae, and charts; prepare clear and concise reports; record and compile research data using arithmetic and statistical procedures for interpretation; maintain cooperative working relationships with others; distinguish colors; supervise technical laboratory personnel.
