Pay Range: Starting at $20.00 (Starting $17.50 + locale differential $2.50 = $20.00) - $22.10 per hour (non-exempt - hourly) and considers preferred experience and preferred education described below.

This position includes a $2.50 locale differential at our Durango worksites.

Description of Responsibilities: The purpose of the job is to provide emotional support and advocate effective recovery-based services for our clients. The ideal Peer Specialist will support clients, therapist and team members during evaluations and assist with client’s stabilization, providing support for clients in developing empowerment skills through self-advocacy, stigma busting and assisting clients in regaining control over their recovery process. They will assist with connecting clients to community resources and support the families of adults, children and youth in navigating these systems.


Supervisory responsibilities: No


Physical demands: Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Employee is frequently required to walk, sit, stand or kneel and occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop. Must have ability to sit for longer periods at a computer. Employee must be able to travel between AHS locations. Possible potential exposure to communicable disease. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. AHS may make reasonable accommodations to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Required Experience:

  • Required Education and Experience
    • Education: High school diploma/GED with life experience.
    • Minimum Experience:
      • Lived experience and must be, or have been a client of mental health services, or is or has been a caretaker of minor child that has received mental health services.
      • Knowledge of behavioral and health issues as well as strategies which contribute to wellness.
      • Experience and/or interest in providing peer support to patients within our 5 county areas.
    • Preferred Education and Experience
      • Education: Bachelor's

Required Skills:

  • Peer Support Specialist is a person who has progressed in their own recovery and is willing to self-identify as a peer and work to help others with chemical dependency or a mental disorder. Because of their life experience, such persons have expertise that professional training cannot replicate.

  • Knowledge and ability to operate standard office equipment including scanner, computer, calculator, copy machine, fax and multi-line telephone.
  • Working knowledge of Windows based computer applications including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook and ability to access the internet.
  • Ability to be helpful and sensitive to the needs of all employees, while concurrently respecting corporate policies, procedures and priorities.
  • Culturally proficient, effective communicator, organized, mature, ethical, reliable, adaptable, creative, self-motivated, enthusiastic team member, and commitment to optimal wellness.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all internal and external customers.
  • Ability to communicate job-related information to individuals and small groups.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; plan own work schedule effectively and multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced setting.
  • Ability to multi-task, organize and prioritize workload in a sometimes-hectic environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to concentrate in sometimes hectic and stressful settings.
  • Ability to relate in a supportive and non-judgmental manner with persons in distress.
  • Ability to follow established universal precautions and report potential exposure to a communicable disease immediately.
  • Ability to provide appropriate and responsible role model through actions and appearance.
  • Ability to read and understand written materials.
  • Must regard work as confidential.
  • Must have current driver’s license, qualify for commercial vehicle insurance and maintain a driving record that allows insurability with AHS’ insurance agency.
  • Travel required.
  • Ability to take on additional duties when necessary.

Additional eligibility requirements:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within 90 days
  • Annual Flu immunization
  • Annual TB screening
  • Current CPI training required within 90 days
  • COVID Vaccination or Exemption Status
