HVAC Utility Mechanic Job at New Canaan Public Schools
- Performs diagnostic troubleshooting, installation, repair and maintenance services to the schools mechanical systems by utilizing attained skills to ensure the safe and efficient operation of all mechanical systems and equipment, including: Gas system, Oil system, Potable water, Chillers, Boilers and all associated equipment.
- Assists and monitors the work of outside agencies and contractors during the maintenance and repair of all HVAC systems and equipment.
- Operates the district’s energy management systems, and identifies valves, actuators, and programming issues and makes necessary repairs to ensure the district’s HVAC systems are operating safely, efficiently and reliability. Monitors the daily system status reports and corrects deficiencies conditions as required.
- Completes rounds of all mechanical rooms to monitor and ensure the proper operation of the heating, cooling and ventilation systems to ensure that they are providing the proper comfort level for the daily school building operation.
- Performs preventative maintenance procedures and repair services on boilers, pumps, HVAC systems equipment and piping systems as required to maintain the efficient, safe, consistent and reliable operation of the district’s facilities.
- Changes belts, filters, pumps, fans, bearings, valves, thermostats, and other controls in completing corrective maintenance work orders.
- Electronically obtains and closes out corrective and preventive work orders.
- Records underground fuel storage tanks readings and completes inventory reconciliation as required by the State of Connecticut D.E.P. Performs regular inspections of fuel monitoring systems.
- Performs snow removal duties when required or any other facilities services during an emergency due to severe weather or utility system failure.
- Maintain proper education requirements for trade licenses and certifications.
- Possess and maintain EPA universal certificates for refrigerant stipend.
- Develops professional skills, attends continuing education sessions to ensure the technical competency and teamwork required to provide quality service; receives guidance and support, relating to work techniques, from the Facilities Manager.
- Assists the Facilities Manager with after hours emergencies and performs other duties as assigned.
- Must have a High School or Trade School diploma to perform this job. Must possess a trade license in an emphasized trade (steamfitter, HVAC Tech, plumbing, etc.), or a minimum of ten years experience in the repair, maintenance, and operation of large facility boiler room and HVAC chillers and physical plant systems and equipment in a school or institutional setting.
- Must have superior customer service skills and demonstrate an exemplary attitude in all dealings with our customers internally and externally. Will have daily contact with customers, as a regular dialog is required to achieve optimum success.
- H.V.A.C. systems that incorporate direct digital controls and are linked to a system wide multi-building energy management system.
- Laws, ordinances, regulations and local building codes regarding air conditioning, heating, refrigeration and ventilating equipment.
- Energy Management control systems.
- Computers; H.V.A.C./maintenance-related programs and operating systems.
- Diagnose defects and install, repair and maintain heating, ventilating, refrigeration and air conditioning units.
- Interpret and work from building plans, wiring diagrams, blueprints of mechanical and electrical structures and manufacturer’s specifications.

- Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance.

Job Summary:

In a shop and field environment must perform heavy work, including pushing/moving items weighing up to 100 lbs., with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Must be able to ascend and descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and poles, etc. one or more stories above ground level. Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl through ceilings, under flooring and similar spaces. Must work in inclement weather or other adverse conditions (tight spaces, dust, fumes, extreme heat, etc.). Must be able to drive own vehicle to various district sites.
