Job Description:

Under the direction of the Child Development Area Supervisor, the Assistant teacher serves as a third teacher in the classroom, working with the teaching team to provide instruction, supervision, and implementation of appropriate learning activities for up to-20, three to five year old children.

The classroom team partners to complete normal class routines, which may include circle time, singing with the children, handling transitions, reading stories, participating with children in learning centers, and positive behavior management. Assists in keeping children safe, healthy, and well supervised in the classroom and on the playground.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Demonstrates and models good health, nutrition, safety, and positive discipline practice and supports the teaching team in providing children with a positive respectful classroom environment.
• Actively supervises and engages children using the active supervision plan, counting children throughout the day indoors and outside, using the name to face methods, adhering to a daily routine, and ensuring no child is ever left alone.
• Responsible for following USDA and Head Start guidelines.
• Supports teaching team with lesson plans, implementation of learning activities in the classroom, small group teaching.
• Supports the teaching team with the overall physical setup and day-to-day classroom routines, including cleaning and sanitizing toys and furniture and meal set-up.
• Supports the teaching team to complete screenings, assessments, and evaluations on children.
• Must support the Head Start Performance Standards, the SUU Head Start Mission, Head Start policies and procedures and the SUU Head Start Standard of Conduct.
• Ability to speak and write Spanish desired but not required.

Education and Experience Requirements:

• Must have current CDA or enrolled in a program to complete the CDA certification within 18 months.
• One year early childhood experience preferred.
• Must demonstrate adequate health to do the job. The successful candidate must be able to lift 40 pounds, carry it for 50 feet, and be able to sit on the carpet and get back up without assistance.
• Employment is conditional pending results of a pre-employment physical exam and TB test, and approval of the Head Start Policy Council.
• Must be able to pass a background check and not have a record of substantiated child abuse or any other crimes against the vulnerable population.
