Guest Artist Director (Chautauqua Opera Company & Conservatory) Job at Chautauqua Institution
The Chautauqua Opera Company & Conservatory summer season will consist of fully produced productions, workshops and ancillary events. To learn more about the season and company, visit opera.chq.org. We build our season around the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA) Safety Guidelines in addition to following the guidelines of the CDC, IATSE, and USA.
About Your Compensation
The employee will be compensated at the rate determined by our AGMA CBA; dues will be taken out and submitted to AGMA on your behalf.
The Guest Artist's total compensation for the production shall be comprised of the following components:
- Rehearsal fees
- Per diem
Should the Artist be asked to rehears more than the contracted number of hours, Chautauqua Opera will compensate the Artist at the prevailing hourly rate. Should the Artist rehearse more than 6 hours in one day, or 30 hours during one week (Monday through Sunday), the Artist will be compensated at the prevailing rate.
Chautauqua Opera shall furnish Artist with round-trip air transportation from the Artist's home city (or other domestic point of travel) to Chautauqua, NY at lowest available airfare, OR if Artist is driving, Chautauqua Opera will provide the cash equivalent of the lowest round-trip airfare. In the event that the Artist performs with another American opera producing organization prior to or following their engagement, air travel expenses shall be based on an equitable portion of such total air travel expenses incurred. If Artist should make any change to air ticket after date of issue, cost of change will be borne by the Artist. Chautauqua Opera will arrange all air travel.
About Your Work Day
- To participate as a core member Chautauqua Opera Company & Conservatory team and adhere to the daily schedule as determined from mid-June to mid- August.
- To support the mainstage productions as assigned and prepare all assignments in advance of arrival.
- To work alongside company management, and departmental heads across the organization as valued team member.
- To arrive on-time for all rehearsals, coachings, events and fittings and with proper attire.
- To act as a representative of the company and our season on Social Media, on the grounds and through various interviews with reporters at the Chautauquan Daily.
About the Referral Program
Chautauqua Institution’s Referral Bonus Program is a talent solution to recruit, develop, and retain a diverse workforce that encompasses all the skills and experience necessary to deliver on our goals and objectives. Chautauqua Institution will provide a $250 referral bonus (less taxes) for active employees referring a new candidate who is hired and remains employed for at least 90-days from the first physical date of work. In the case of seasonal positions working less than 6-months, the new candidate must remain actively employed for at least 30-days from the first physical date of work and until the closing date of the season. The closing date of the season is the last Sunday in August.
About Your Schedule
Chautauqua Institution and Chautauqua Hotel Company offer flexible schedules, full and part-time, for seasonal employment during summer operations starting annually each June and concluding in August. Seasonal employment may be available earlier (pre-season) and beyond season (post-season) based on business needs and candidate availability. Schedules typically include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as a requirement. While you will confirm your final schedule with management at the time of an interview and offer of employment, you should generally anticipate the following schedule options for this position:
Will be scheduled to work an average of 40-hours/week. Scheduled hours will include evenings, weekends, and holidays based on business needs.
About Living on the Grounds
Chautauqua Institution may provide limited housing options on our grounds or assist you with locating nearby housing arrangements for select opportunities based on business needs. Housing is not an option for many positions and may be of a cost to you. Candidates should assume there are no employer-provided or employer-assisted housing options available for this position unless it is otherwise stated.
This position offers employer-provided housing and parking. Housing includes a private bedroom and shared living space; COVID restrictions and safety precautions in place. Residency starts in early June and ends on mid-to-late August.
