Retail General Manager – Luxury Garden Shop and Nursery

Salaried Year Round Position

We are Marders, one of the most multi-faceted businesses on the East End of Long Island. We create and maintain landscapes, gardens and sell products that reflect our client’s lifestyles and emphasize the character of the local environment with a commitment to organic practices.

At Marders we don’t just plant trees - we host events for the entire community including garden workshops, environmental lectures, holiday open houses, gallery openings and film exhibitions. Our Retail Garden Shop and Nursery sources, supplies and sells specialty products for home and garden, along with a vast variety of above-ground plants that are always available at our 18-acre main property.

We are seeking a Retail General Manager for our Garden Shop and Nursery who will be responsible for driving a profitable business with a focus on authentic connections, building long term client relationships and efficient operations. As an integral part of the overall growth and success of the company, this is an exciting opportunity for a natural born leader with confidence, creativity and innate leadership skills who enjoys the challenge of team building and driving sales.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for all areas of the Retail Garden Shop and Nursery business, communicating feedback in a productive manner and executing all company initiatives to drive sales results
  • Demonstrate a leadership role for the store, setting the standard and holding employees accountable for authentic customer connections and positive employee culture
  • Maintain exceptional operational standards with urgency and attention to detail upholding all store processes and procedures
  • Evaluate and develop store employees through benchmarks, performance reviews and providing consistent clear feedback and motivation
  • Provide thorough training for retail team and ensure seamless onboarding for new employees
  • Communicate consistent feedback to buyers identifying areas of opportunity
  • Provides leadership to the sales team.
  • Motivates and encourages sales team to ensure quotas are met.
  • Reviews and analyzes sales and operational records and reports; uses data to project

sales, determine profitability and targets, and identify potential new markets.

  • Identifies and analyzes customer preferences to properly direct sales efforts.
  • Assigns territories and sets quotas for sales teams.
  • Consults with potential customers to understand their needs; identifies and suggests

equipment, products, or services that will meet those needs.

  • Resolves customer complaints, staffing problems, and other issues that may interfere

with efficient sales operations.

  • Collaborates with executive leadership to develop sales quotas and strategies.
  • Prepares sales budget; monitors and approves expenses.
  • Acts as company representative at trade association meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent sales and customer service skills with proven negotiation skills.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Responsible for achieving store shrink goals
  • Manage all scheduling and time off for the store
  • Work with team to coordinate and prepare for in-shop events to drive attendance and sales revenue

Experience, Skills and Requirements:

  • Proven experience with all facets of retail management, store operations, employee

training and visual merchandising

  • Track record of setting and achieving goals, developing sales teams and holding them

accountable

  • Skilled in the areas of driving sales volume, delegation, time management, effective

communication and constructive feedback

  • Confident coaching and mentoring all employees to achieve optimal results
  • Able to assess data and customer relationships quickly to personalize each experience
  • Write and communicate effectively with clients and colleagues
  • Availability to work during prime business periods – weekends, holidays and events
  • Able to move around all store areas and be accessible to customers with the ability to

bend, reach and lift up to 40 lbs.

  • Responsible for compliance with all Marders policies and procedure
  • Responsible for proper completion of all paperwork
  • Responsible for demonstrating your ability to contribute to the company’s mission of cutting edge-state of the art products and practices

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $95,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
