SUMMARY:
Under supervision take emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance in the dispatch center. Dispatch police, fire and emergency units as appropriate. Monitor multiple radio channels to receive, relay, and transmit information over radio. Conduct record checks, enter calls for service into a computer aided dispatch terminal, and perform a range of clerical support activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Receive incoming emergency 911 and non-emergency calls for assistance, obtain essential information including type of emergency and location; dispatch police, fire and emergency rescue units as appropriate.

2. Monitor multiple radio channels to receive, relay, and transmit radio messages.

3. Operates computer aided dispatch terminal to perform various records checks at the request of on-scene police officers or other authorized personnel concerning driving criminal records, wants or warrants, and vehicle registration information.

4. Monitors GEM 911 (Text to 911)

5. Operate Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) system. Is responsible for complying with LEIN requirements and audits. Enter and disseminate local and statewide LEIN messages.

6. Maintain a control system of warrants and enters or cancels them from the information storage and retrieval system as needed.

7. Answer phone calls, including inquiries, complaints and messages. Provides answers to routine service questions and department policies in accordance with defined operating procedures. Greet visitors to the front desk when an Officer is unavailable.

8. Maintain records and logs regarding warrants, processes warrants through computer system, monitors outstanding warrants for validity and recalls warrants as authorized.

9. Assist in monitoring prisoners and various police department locations via closed
circuit television monitors.

10. Perform a variety of other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Education: Possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.

Skills: Demonstrably proficient typing skills, multi-tasking ability and the ability to communicate clearly Experience: (Preferred) Experience in a public safety setting or other dispatch related environment

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization and utilize comprehensive listening skills to effectively communicate.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to speak to emotionally charged callers and effectively make sense of potentially complex situations in a relatively short time frame. Possess the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must have a valid Michigan Driver's license and have the ability to operate a City-owned vehicle.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Strong computer and typing skills very helpful.
