Overview:

Assist the Produce Manager in operation of the department to meet objectives for sales, margin, and customer service. Lead and support produce staff and member workers in performance of daily tasks.

Status:

Hourly, $20.00/hour, flexible schedule including early morning, late evening, and weekend shifts

Job Responsibilities:

Customer Service:

• Assist customers with product questions in a prompt, friendly, courteous manner, referring them to other staff when necessary
• Offer samples and suggestions for purchase and preparation
• Help customers place Special Orders

Personnel:

• Assist manager in selection and hiring of qualified applicants for Produce staff
• Help Produce Manager design and implement Produce Associate training program
• Assist in training of staff and member workers
• Aid the Produce Manager on scheduling of staff and member workers
• Work with the Produce Manager to identify and resolve work performance problems and offer feedback, both negative and positive, to staff and member workers
• Report personnel concerns to Produce Manager as necessary
• Assist Produce Manager in conducting staff evaluations, offering input on performance as necessary
• Set and maintain work priorities for staff and member workers

Purchasing:

• Assist with Menands market runs as needed, driving truck and picking up orders when necessary
• Assume buying duties when necessary
• Work with Produce Manager and buyers to update prices and signage, both on sales floor in the POS
• Work with Produce Manager and Merchandiser to design front displays, paying special attention to seasonality and upcoming holidays

Receiving:

• Assist with receiving deliveries, including: checking produce for quality, verifying piece counts and weights, helping with unloading as needed, assisting with storage of back stock
• Make sure product is being rotated properly from the walk-in cooler to the racks

Merchandising/Stocking:

• Coordinate replenishment and rotation of displays, and daily culling, ensuring that staff are following established stocking priorities
• Coordinate prep of product for display
• Dispose of damaged or spoiled products promptly and with care to composting. Notify Produce Manager of waste.
• Keep produce retail and prep area in a clean orderly condition. This includes, but is not limited to: removing trash, cleaning surfaces, sweeping and mopping as needed
• Assist with morning set-up or evening closings
• Coordinate replenishment of wet and dry racks daily to accommodate changes in product availability

Department Maintenance:

• Oversee maintenance and cleanliness of produce prep areas in accordance with Health Department standards.
• Seek training on Health Department codes as needed.
• Work with Produce Manager to create a cleaning schedule and ensure that it is followed.
• Note and advise Produce Manager of any repairs, replacements, and/or additions needed to maintain equipment.

Safety:

• Consistently practice (and model for others) safe and proper lifting procedures
• Be mindful of potential hazards to customers and employees. Correct hazards as they occur

• Use all equipment (including box cutters, ladders, and stepstools) in accordance with department safety procedures

Additional:

• Attend department and store meetings
• Assist Produce manager in organizing morning and afternoon huddles
• Help complete inventories, including counting and calculation
• Assist Produce Manager in establishing goals for labor and department
• Perform other tasks assigned by supervisor
