Since 1873, Burnham Corporation, and now, Burnham LLC, doing business under the name “Burnham Commercial”, has produced steam and hot water boilers for commercial and industrial applications. Located at 1239 Harrisburg Pike, in Lancaster, PA, Burnham Commercial’s facilities have gone through numerous expansions and changes, since its original construction in 1923. Today, the facilities continue to produce high quality products for its customers. Burnham Commercial offers a full line of scotch, firebox, and cast iron boilers ranging from light commercial to industrial sizes in order to meet its customers’ needs and is a leading manufacturer and marketer of high-quality boilers and control systems for commercial and industrial applications.
Summary:
Under general supervision, assembles the various parts and sections of a steel boiler (both high and low pressure) and/or other products to make a complete unit. “Fits” the different sections of boiler plate and/or other product together and tack welds them so as to rigidly hold them in place for the Code Welder who completely welds all seams and joints.
Must be able to read blueprints and weld symbols and pass an ASME Weld test. 2G SMAW (7018), 2G GMAW, 3G SMAW (uphill 718) all with backing.
In addition, but not limited to the above requirements, this individual will be required, at times, to possess, troubleshoot, repair, or maintain the following:
- Working from verbal instructions and engineering prints, assembles boilers and/or other product by fitting together the various component parts of the two or three pass variety.
- Measures cuts and forms (when necessary) stay bolts which space the various sections.
- Using oxyacetylene burning equipment, cuts openings for access holes, fittings,etc.
- Uses plumb line, level, square, steel tape to accurately align marking lines previously drawn by layout man.
- Uses portable grinding wheel to grind plate when necessary to insure proper fit.
- Fits the various parts in such a manner as to facilitate subsequent welding operations.
- Locates and secures all fittings on shell as required.
- May be required to operate powered lift trucks.
- Directs the work of a Helper (when required) who assists in the fitting of the product.
- Uses overhead crane, hydraulic jacks, spud bar, screw jack and associated equipment to move, carry, force or place heavy steel plates when fitting and assembling.
- Sets in several tubes in tube sheets in order to space and align boiler heads.
- Performs related work as directed commensurate with this or lesser rates labor grade.

Education and/or Experience: High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret document such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine correspondence.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractures and decimals. Ability to compute rates.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills: Basic knowledge
Certificates, Licenses Registrations: Must pass ASME 2G stick, 2G mig and 3G stick weld tests
Other Skills and Abilities: Basic blueprint reading; use and understanding of measuring devices
Safety Requirements: Welding hood, protective Footwear Ansi Z41 Class 75, hearing protection, safety glasses with side shields, and cloth or leather work gloves.
