Job Summary:
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Health Promotion and Education within the Department of Campus Recreation and Wellness, the Fitness Coordinator is a full-time professional (12-month) who is responsible for coordinating fitness programs and amenities offered at Saint Louis University. This position assists with the organization, facilitation, and overall management of the department's effort to encourage participation and engagement in recreation among the entire Saint Louis University (SLU) community. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to the ongoing development and oversight of group fitness classes, personal training, fitness and health education, and wellness programs, facility and equipment management, and supervision of assigned part-time non-student and student employees.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide administration, leadership, vision, and supervision of a comprehensive fitness program, including group fitness and instructional classes, personal training, events, incentives, and specialty fitness classes; includes scheduling, staffing, registration, cancellation and evaluation.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the fitness spaces within the Simon Recreation Center, including but not limited to 25,000 square feet of cardio and strength space, five multipurpose rooms, a Spinning studio, a fitness assessment room, and a 1/7th of a mile indoor track.
  • Regularly perform facility and equipment inspections to ensure safety, cleanliness, organization, and functionality; coordinate timely cleaning, repairs, and preventative maintenance with student staff and internal and external service providers.
  • Directly supervise approximately 20 part-time staff made up of Group Fitness Instructors, Personal Trainers, and Building Maintenance to include hiring, training, scheduling, assigning work, evaluation, recognition, development, termination, regular meetings, payroll/time approval, and promotions.
  • Research, prepare, and implement budgets and purchasing plans, which includes but is not limited to annual budget projections, equipment cost estimates, equipment replacement plans, cost mitigation strategies, and programming expenses.
  • Assist with the ongoing development and facilitation of the department’s emergency action plan, risk management, safety guidelines, policies, and procedures and ensure compliance.
  • Serve as a mentor and role model to staff in relation to performance expectations, and personal and professional development.
  • Develop and implement continuing education and training for fitness staff.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of the recreation management software (Fusion), including back-end management of features within the application.
  • Address member concerns and feedback as it relates to programing, policy, facilities, equipment, etc.; investigate and apply appropriate resolution or alternative solution(s) to complex situations.
  • Maintain records, perform assessment, and prepare reports (e.g. equipment inventory, purchasing, and repairs, building and equipment maintenance, program attendance, participant surveys and evaluations, etc.).
  • Be knowledgeable of and provide information on all department facilities, programs, and services.
  • Assist with departmental marketing and communication.
  • Support the development of strategic plans, individual and team goals, and measurable objectives.
  • Actively participate in staff meetings and staff development activities sponsored by the Department, Division, and University.
  • Submit facility maintenance requests within established timelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Serve as campus security authority and complete all requirements pertaining to this role.
  • Serve in an on-call capacity as an emergency contact for the department.
  • Represent the department on a variety of campus and community committees and task forces.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, Student Affairs, Wellness, or closely related field.
  • A positive work history in a collegiate, community, or commercial fitness environment.
  • Certification from a nationally recognized fitness association (ACSM, ACE, AFAA, NSCA) or willingness to obtain within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Current Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid, CPR, and AED and certification or willingness to obtain within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Current Mental Health First Aid certification or willingness to obtain within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion approaches and their connections to well-being.
  • Ability and willingness to occasionally work weekends and evenings as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, Student Affairs, Wellness, or closely related field.
  • Two (2) or more years of positive full-time work experience in collegiate, community, or commercial fitness environment, with specific experience in programming and/or facility operations.
  • Experience supervising, managing, and mentoring staff, to include recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and disciplining.
  • Leadership experience with consistently progressive responsibilities in a fitness, university, or recreational setting.
  • Experience with recreation management software similar to Fusion, scheduling software similar to When To Work, and human resource management software similar to Workday.
  • Participation in professional organizations, research, and scholarship, and/or professional development such as association leadership or presentations.
