Position: Seasonal Fisheries Technician

Position Description:
South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (SDGFP) will be taking applications for three fisheries technicians for the 2023 field season. Start and end dates for the three positions will be approximately:
- Position #1: February 1 – July 30 (6 months)
- Position #2: March 1 – September 30 (7 months)
- Position #3: April 1 – December 30 (9 months)
Work will involve assisting fisheries managers in conducting management and research activities on Missouri River reservoirs and surrounding small impoundments. These duties will include assisting with fish spawning and stocking operations, fish population sampling (gill netting, seining, electrofishing), and angler use and harvest (creel) surveys. Technicians will also assist with data collection, analysis, and possible presentations of ongoing fisheries research projects. Work duties will also include exposure to laboratory work involving ageing fish via bony structures and recovering and reading coded wire tags implanted in fish. The incumbent will gain experience in proper maintenance of boats, outboards, trailers, vehicles, and other various equipment. The incumbent may also be exposed to other areas of work with Wildlife Division Law Enforcement, Wildlife Damage Control, and Land Management staff, as well.
Essential requirements:
Valid driver’s license, the ability to perform strenuous physical labor, the ability to lift 60 pounds, and the ability to work nights and weekends.
Beneficial abilities:
Operation and maintenance of boats, motors, and trailers; basic vehicle and equipment maintenance; knowledge of fisheries management principles and techniques; fish identification; and basic computer operation.
