Duties and Responsibilities:
In addition to contractual duties for this position which will include counseling and program coordination, all faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, in their departmental activities and in the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the counseling assignment may be in the evening program. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. assisting students with decision-making and the exploration of their educational, career, and personal goals;
2. working with students to develop educational plans;
3. adhering to the schedule that has been developed with the Department Chairpersons, which may include individual student appointments, drop-in assignments, workshops, and weekend and/or evening assignments;
4. collaborating with instructional faculty in support of the goals of the institution;
5. participating in the college governance process, including attendance at all department and division meetings, and serve on college wide committees;
6. promoting the philosophy that integrates counseling and mentoring to support student learning;
7. participating in required training and activities such as conferences, regional meetings, outreach, orientations for students, community activities & social/cultural events, field trips, mentorship, advisory groups, etc.;
8. participating in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide;
9. creating a positive environment that provides students with the support/motivation likely to enable them to transfer;
10. maintaining current knowledge of counseling techniques and other effective student support intervention strategies;
11. engaging in outreach targeting feeder high schools and community groups;
12. maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics;
13. performing other related duties as assigned.
The FYE & DE Counselor will play an essential role in supporting students through their connection with and entry into Diablo Valley College. The position will have two key areas of responsibility: assisting dual enrollment efforts to bridge the gap between high school and college, and supporting first year students in DVCs FYE program. In each area, the FYE & DE Counselor will serve as both a Counselor and Coordinator (with 50% time in each function, to be evaluated and adjusted as needed), engaging in direct services to students as well as program coordination functions.
The FYE & DE Counselors direct services to students will include assisting students in exploring careers and majors, understanding educational pathways, developing study skills, connecting to campus resources, and overcoming obstacles to success. The FYE & DE Counselor will also instruct and/or recruit instructors for FYE and DE counseling classes, program orientations, registration workshops and other student onboarding events. Additionally, the FYE & DE Counselor will work with program faculty and staff to identify struggling students and design interventions to provide support.
The FYE & DE Counselor will also engage in coordination of FYE and DE efforts. The Counselor will assist in planning program events, coordinating student support services, promoting program growth, convening team meetings, and collecting and analyzing program data. The FYE & DE Counselor will serve as a counseling liaison to target high schools, providing a point of contact for high school students, teachers and counselors. In this capacity, the FYE & DE Counselor will assist with high school articulation, outreach, the High School Counselors Conference, Principals Breakfast, and other events.
Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience:
Understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff and faculty.
Masters in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling,OR the equivalent(NOTE: A bachelors degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Desirable Qualifications:
1. Demonstrated understanding of the comprehensive nature of California Community College Counseling, which includes providing high quality academic, career, personal counseling, both one-on-one and through teaching/instruction.
2. Possess an equity-minded focus, responsiveness, and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles; and successfully foster and support an inclusive educational and employment environment.
3. Experience in program development, management, and/or coordination involving onboarding, retention and success of community college students with an understanding of the barriers and obstacles students face in the college transition.
4. Experience working collaboratively with faculty, staff and administrators to recruit and support students who are historically underrepresented, and address issues of equity and inclusion both in and out of the classroom.
5. Experience teaching and designing curriculum for college-level courses and/or workshops in areas such as college success, career planning/exploration, educational planning, and personal development, including but not limited to curriculum targeted toward dual enrolled and new college students.
