Casual Emergency Medical Responder
Purpose:
The Emergency Medical Responder is responsible for responding to emergency and non-emergency calls in a calm, efficient, and prompt manner by administering basic life support services to patients at the scene. The Emergency Medical Responder also is responsible for assisting the EMT and Paramedic with Advanced Life Support services at the scene, and in-route to the hospital. The Emergency Medical Responder reports to the Director and does not provide supervision to other employees.
Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
Any employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential functions. These examples do not include all the duties that the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
1. Assess the nature and extent of injury or illness to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be administered.
2. Must be fluent with all Northwest Regional Medical Control Protocols.
3. Extricate victims of accidents, sudden illness or entrapment using proper rescue and medical techniques.
4. Effectively communicate with team members, law enforcement, fire department personnel, other healthcare providers, patients, and patients’ family members.
5. Complete patient care forms, insurance forms, and electronic documentation within 24 hours of the service call; properly document each transport in Missaukee EMS records.
6. Clean organize, refuel, and restock vehicles to achieve ready condition following each transport.
7. Inspect vehicles at the start of each shift and fill out daily Rig Check sheet. To ensure all are in good working condition and properly maintained/stocked, including maintenance/stocking of equipment and supplies.
8. Handle telephone communications professionally.
9. Assist in maintaining EMS facilities by conducting cleaning (sweeping, mopping, laundry, etc.), washing dishes, shoveling snow, salting, lawncare, etc.
10. Adhere to all departmental policies and procedures concerning safety, including bloodborne pathogens and other contamination exposures.
11. Completing all education as assigned by the Director or Deputy Director.
12. Provide education/training to EMS employees and the public as assigned by the Shift Lieutenant, Deputy Director, or Director.
13. Comply with all laws and Missaukee EMS policies regarding patient privacy.
14. Perform any other job-related duties as assigned.
15. Promotes a safe, healthy, learning friendly work environment.
Employment Qualifications:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and minimum qualifications necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
1. High School Diploma or GED
2. Must possess and maintain current Michigan Emergency Medical Responder License.
3. Must possess and maintain current AHA BLS Provider card.
4. Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver’s license (operator status)
5. Ability to problem solve, think, and respond quickly in emergency situations.
6. Ability to comprehend, process and apply both verbal and written skills appropriate for the position.
7. Ability to comprehend, chain of command and following directions.
8. Ability to detect errors, determine causes and make corrections.
9. Ability to respond immediately to a call for service during assigned work period and be flexible with work schedule to provide additional assistance when calls for service require additional staff response.
10. Possess thorough working knowledge of local geography in order to directly and promptly respond to calls for service.
11. Possess interpersonal skills necessary to deal courteously and effectively with Missaukee County EMS employees, patients, patients’ family, law enforcement personnel, fire department personnel, and other healthcare personnel.
12. Must complete Prehospital Trauma Life Support or International Trauma Life Support within 3 months of hire.
13. Must complete NIMS ICS 100,200,700, and 800 within 3 months of hire.
14. Must complete an Emergency Vehicle operator course within 3 months of hire.
15. Cannot have any disciplinary issues within the past 9 months
16. Must be in good standing order with Northwest Regional Medical Control Authority
17. Must be in good standing order with the MDHHS.
18. Attending an EMT-B program (Preferred)
19. Michigan Instructor Coordinator License (Preferred)
20. AHA BLS Instructor Certification (Preferred)
Physical Requirements:
This job requires the ability to perform the essential functions contained in this description. These include, but are not limited to, the following requirements.
1. Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, turn, bend, and lift as necessary to ride in ambulance, rescue patients in various emergency situations, and safely load and transport patients.
2. Ability to lift and operate all equipment that is utilized by MCEMS providers.
3. Ability to lift and carry a loaded patient stretcher.
4. Ability to execute fine motor skills in high stress situations.
5. Ability to hear, see, and speak English.

Working Conditions:
1. Works in an emergency medical services facility, Shifts will be 24 hours in length 24 hours per week.
2. Lunch break is paid, as employee is always on duty during his/her shift to respond to an emergency.
3. 4 sleeping rooms are provided for those employees to utilize when working 24 hours.
4. Sleeping, napping, TV Time, or working on personal items is not permitted until all assigned work duties are completed.
5. Will work in a variety of work conditions.
6. All other duties as assigned.
WAGES SCALE:
Starting- $14.50
6 month- 14.86
1 year- 15.22
2 year- 15.58
3 year- 15.94
