ELECTRN (Electrician) Job at University of California, Davis
JOB SUMMARY
Perform journey-level electrical work. Procure materials, fabricate, install, repair, inspect, service maintain and replace components of campus low voltage systems, including construction, maintenance and alarms. Assist electricians with work on high voltage systems, elevators, and other campus electrical or mechanical systems. Work independently and perform quality work safely, efficiently and in accordance with applicable codes. May also assist Inspector/Planner/Estimators, engineers, superintendents or other staff perform inspection, estimating or preparation of specifications and drawings for work on electrical construction, maintenance and alarm systems. Perform proper time keeping and accounting of materials and expenses for assigned projects.
POSITION INFORMATION
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Lift up to 50 lbs. of electrical equipment and material. Climb ladders, on top of machinery and equipment.
- Crawl, stoop, bend and work in tight, cramped areas.
- Valid CA driver’s license required.
- Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
- This position is subject to completion of a Pre-Placement Medical Exam provided by Employee Health Services, at no charge to the applicant. Required to wear protective clothing and respirator in circumstances that require personal protection from infectious disease. Specific hazards include but are not limited to: asbestos, PCB’s radioactive materials, industrial and laboratory chemicals, fuels, solvents, infectious materials and wastes, biological hazards and other materials labeled hazardous.
- This position may be required to work a non-standard work schedule that may include nights, weekends, or alternative schedules such as 80 hours in 8 or 9 shifts instead of 10. Vacation usage by the employee may be restricted during peak workload periods as required to meet the needs of the campus.

- This position supports critical campus functions operating 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. To assure adequate support of these functions the employee may be required to participate in an on-call program to facilitate timely return of staff to the campus as required to meet critical needs. This on-call program may include requirements for the employee to inform the University how they can be reached during non-working hours, to carry University provided radios, cell phones, pagers or other telecommunications equipment which would facilitate communication between the campus and employee during non-work hours, or to accept rotating on-call responsibility which could periodically restrict the off-campus movements of the employee. If the employee’s non-working hour movements are restricted by the University, employees will be compensated for their ‘On-Call’ time according to the established on-call rates. If actually called into work, the employee will be compensated according to the established campus policies. Employees may also be required to return to work after an assigned shift due to business necessity or emergencies. Compensation for ‘Call-Back’ will be in accordance with campus policies.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Additional Minimum License/Certification
- Must possess a certificate of completion from a recognized union apprenticeship program, University apprenticeship program, accredited trade school or have the equivalent amount of experience and training comparable to a journey level craftsperson in the electrical trade. Non-certified applicants will have their training and experience evaluated by members of Facilities Services Senior Leadership Group.
Minimum Education/Experience
- Demonstrated journey level experience in the Electrical trade and related practices to perform assigned duties without direct supervision.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)
- Highly motivated and results oriented. Must maintain flexibility in a continuously changing and fast paced work environment
- Maintain proficiency on industry technical changes, codes and other aspects of the electrical trade.
- Interact professionally with all members of the campus community and the general public
- Provide clearly written and understandable reports and instructions
- Follow through on customer requests to resolve problems, answer questions and ability to use available resources and references
- Work within a team environment with other crafts and to assist fellow craftsperson’s.
Preferred:
- Interpersonal, oral and written communication.
- Ability to understand and interpret technical data, mechanical and structural specifications and blueprints.
- Computer skills to operate a personal computer.
- Knowledge of approved safety devices and practices.

This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity checks.
