Electrical Engineer, Printed Circuit Board Assembly
Job Summary:
The Electrical Engineer, Printed Circuit Board Assembly transitions medical devices into a production environment from externally or internally developed designs. This position will be a part of the New Product Introduction team and will be the lead electrical engineer for the PCBA commodity. This position will work with customers and suppliers to improve speed to market while maintaining quality and regulatory compliance in an ISO 13485 environment. Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for PCB & PCBA release of internally and externally developed designs.
- Provide technical reviews and perform updates to PCB assemblies and fabrication packages to ensure manufacturability, alignment with supply chain, and quality of design
- Provide direction to Electrical and Process Development Engineers aiding with PCB & PCBA transitions to manufacturing
- Provide direction to PCB Designers for design updates to improve manufacturability
- Generation and release of PCB and PCBA fabrication and assembly files of modified designs in an Engineering Change Control System
- Establish best practices for transition of complex PCBA to manufacturing to align with supply chain needs, develop means to reduce costs, and increase speed to market
- Support product development with new programs from early concept through commercial manufacturing, helping to align technology and complexity of the design with the right suppliers.
- Support of design changes for obsolete components
- Troubleshoot electrical failures in medical devices in the new product introduction space and recommend design changes to mitigate future failure modes
- Mentor process development and development engineering staff to grow technical knowledge of electrical engineering and PCBA manufacturing fundamentals
- Work alongside test engineering electrical engineers to develop best practices in test and automation as applicable to PCBAs
- Travel to suppliers with commodity managers to assist with supplier selection and supplier development
- Consistently identify creative opportunities to add value to individual customers’ programs and products and provide value for Minnetronix, beyond defined project scope and constraints.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- B.S. or M.S. required preferably in Electrical Engineering.
- 5+ years’ applicable experience
- Operations experience with PCBA and PCB manufacturing
- Experience with IPC standards for PCB and PCBA.
- Ability to generate and review fabrication and assembly files for printed circuit bare boards and board assemblies
- Detailed understanding and application of PCB & PCBA fabrication and assembly processes
- Ability to perform supplier audit of PCB & PCBA manufacturing sites based on technical and process merit
- Ability to work with engineering and customer teams to evaluate FMECA and Hazard Analysis to identify requirements for PCB assembly and test
- Experience with requirements based PCB supplier selection (material selections FR4, stackups, controlled impedance characterization , plating, cross sectioning)
- Experience with requirements based PCB supplier selection (wave solder, selective solder, ICT, 2D & 3D AOI, X-ray, PCBA wash requirements, solder paste selection)
- Demonstrated capability in obsolescence review and ability to identify alternate equivalent components
- Experience implementing design changes in a production environment through a controlled engineering change system.
- Experience with ODB++ and Gerber file formats
- Experience with Altium (preferred) or another PCB CAD tool
- Knowledge of industry standards including IPC-A-610, IPC-7711, IPC-7721, IPC-J-STD
