Residential Rehabilitation Counselor 2

We are seeking applicants that demonstrate flexibility, a desire to learn, and interpersonal skills that build up our team’s forward-thinking attitude for the role of Residential Rehabilitation Counselor 2 at DSHS's Special Commitment Center (SCC). These jobs are on-call, so offer you scheduling flexibility and a foot-in-the-door to WA State employment.

SCC is a highly structured and secure treatment setting located on McNeil Island in the beautiful Puget Sound. Our program treats people who are detained and/or civilly committed and assists them in addressing their sexual offending and individual treatment needs.

SCC employees also receive an additional $10 per day premium pay in addition to advertised salary and a free ORCA card for transportation use. ?Ferry transportation is provided to McNeil Island employees .

In the role of Residential Rehabilitation Counselor 2, you will be responsible for daily oversite in the residential unit. You will work as part of a team responsible for implementing residential treatment strategies that contribute to the rehabilitation of individuals at SCC. Your knowledge and experience will help Transforming Lives!

Some of what you'll do:
  • Provide direct day-to-day monitoring and care of the resident population
  • Engage with residents, assisting them in developing skills and becoming positive members of society
  • Instruct and encourage residents
  • Interact with residents on a daily basis, direct and re-direct as necessary
  • Assist and coach SCC residents
  • Maintain awareness of and review changes to residents' treatment goals to assist and encourage them
  • Escort residents to and from the living unit
  • Monitor resident's use of prescription medications
  • Maintain safety and security in the living environment and perform routine security inspections
  • Perform continued observation of all resident interactions and intervene when necessary
  • Provide accurate, detailed, written documentation and reports on resident progress toward treatment goals
  • Complete documentation, reports, and other paperwork both electronic and paper

What we're looking for:
  • Ability to respond appropriately to negative behavior
  • Use, effective verbal techniques to diffuse situations
  • Knowledge of CPR and first responder level first aid
  • Clear and concise writing skills

Who should apply?

Professionals with one of the following:
  • High school graduation or GED and two years of experience providing direct care to psychiatric patients, residents, or inmates in a residential or in-patient mental health setting
  • Or, satisfactory completion of the Residential Rehabilitation Counselor 1 in-training plan
  • Equivalent education*/experience will also be considered


  • College-level coursework will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Free ORCA cards are available for Pierce County employees. Ferry transportation is provided to McNeil Island employees.
