POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Special Education participates in the provision of leadership and oversight for the school district.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES:
  • Directs and coordinates special education, administrative, and counseling activities for students enrolled in Home Campus schools.
    • Develops and implements curriculum, program, and procedures designed to meet the educational needs of all identified special education students enrolled at service delivery sites.
    • Provides for appropriate and accurate assessment and designation of referred students; designs, implements, and manages the IEP process for students complying with all state and federal regulations.
    • Serves as consultant to teachers and other school staff for remediation of communication disorders for identified students.
    • Demonstrates concern and respect for individual students, assumes major responsibility for academic and social growth of each student, and cares for student health and well-being during the school day.
    • Administers the department budget and supervises staff.
  • Supervises and coordinates all administrative duties for both students and staff at the schools; administers the Special Education Program.
    • Administers the special education program including development and implementation of the master schedule, staffing assignments, student scheduling, and allocation of material resources.
    • Designs, implements, and manages a system of information management to tracks student enrollment and attendance.
    • Provides needed information to accurately bill for regular and special education.
    • Provides regular program audits to assure compliance with all state and federal regulations and all funding guidelines; provides timely reports of proposed and adopted state and federal regulations.
    • Provides oversight of special education teacher certification, staff development activities, and all special education processing to meet state and federal guidelines.
    • Serves as coordinator of staff participation in the UNO program and other course work leading to Nebraska Special Education certification.
    • Initiates and follows up on contracts with other school districts for services provided.
  • Serves as a role model in carrying out the Father Flanagan's Boys' Home mission.
    • Directs all activities towards the fulfillment of the Boys Town mission
    • Directs all actions to reflect the values and principles of Boys Town
    • Establishes and maintains an environment that encourages teamwork, collaboration, and ethical behavior
    • Maintains regular, reliable and predictable attendance
    • Supports other members of the management team and their work
  • Other Duties: This job description incorporates the essential functions and duties required for this position. However, other duties may be required and assigned at times and as determined by a supervisor in order to meet the needs of the organization
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge in curriculum, educational supervision, and instruction.
  • Skill in analysis and synthesis.
  • High level of professionalism and interpersonal skills. Excellent critical thinking, analytical, and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate with individuals at all levels in the organization and with external contacts in an articulate, professional manner while maintaining necessary degree of confidentiality.
  • Ability to successfully lead a team of education and administration professionals.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Nebraska Department of Education Administrative Certificate required; endorsements in special education and supervision preferred.
  • 5 to 7 years of education administration experience including special education supervision preferred.
  • Nebraska administrative certification
