Job Description
Job Summary
Responsible for the administration of the Imaging Center, oversight of Art Department galleries, and supervision of Imaging Center staff. This includes program management, policy planning, and coordinating the exhibition program for Art Department galleries. In conjunction with Art Department faculty, develop strategic vision for the technological-pedagogical needs across the art curriculum and implement this vision. Serve as liaison to other academic departments and programs, especially the Museum of Art, Educational Technology Services and the Libraries; work with Development Office on Art-related grants and related projects; represent the department and demonstrate leadership in emerging cross-campus initiatives. Collaborate with the Director of the Office of the Arts on technology-related initiatives across the Arts. Supervise and conduct performance reviews of Imaging Center staff, student workers and interns. Direct assignment activities, workflows, budgeting, equipment acquisition and maintenance.
Essential Functions
Leadership and Operations (40%): Work with Art Department faculty to define programmatic needs of the Imaging Center, Art Department galleries and exhibition program, and technological-pedagogical requirements of the Art curriculum and Arts faculty research. Supervise and coordinate workflows of Imaging Center staff. Represent the department and play leadership role in emerging cross-campus initiatives. Oversee implementation of software, hardware, technological innovation in the Art curriculum, and exhibition program for Oresman and Jannotta galleries, Imaging Center, VCRC, Architecture Studio, and related digital media classrooms/labs in Hillyer.
Instruction/Access to Resources (35%): Define and implement educational initiatives for Art Department faculty and students. Plan and conduct training on the use of images, databases, art-specific software to support teaching and research. Develop instructional materials, online and within the collections. Support faculty projects with digital media, be it production or archiving of such projects. In collaboration with department faculty, establish collection development policy and develop productive student projects related to image management. Coordinate with other Departments and relevant campus partners to ensure optimal user access.
Technology (15%): Plan and implement technology needs for Art Department curriculum, take leadership role regarding technology needs for the Imaging Center, VCRC, Architecture Studio and related digital media classrooms/labs in Hillyer, in collaboration with relevant campus partners. Implement new versions of software and recommend hardware/software for Art Department pedagogy. Coordinate with relevant campus partners to ensure inter-operability of teaching and learning resources. Develop policy and implement accessioning/de-accessioning policies as required, as well as reallocation of spaces and furnishings.
Budget & External Relations (10%): Plan and manage the Imaging Center budget and facility, collaborate on budget requests and management of budget for VCRC, Architecture Studio and related digital media classrooms/labs in Hillyer. Work closely with supervisors and Development staff to pursue funding opportunities for the Art exhibition program. Participate in and promote joint projects with the Museum of Art, consortial endeavors (e.g., Five Colleges) when appropriate. Maintain active involvement in the field (attend conferences, workshops, and network with peer institutions).
Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)
Education/Experience: Master’s Degree in relevant discipline, Art History or Studio Art preferred, plus 5-7 year of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education/experience. Familiarity with the broad field of the visual arts, and fluency with current and emergent technologies in the visual arts required.
Skills
Demonstrated dynamic person with strong administrative, leadership, and communication skills; expansive knowledge of visual arts field and its pedagogic needs at the college-level, especially current and emerging technologies for pedagogy in architecture, studio art and art history; experience with grant writing for the arts, and gallery management; ability to work effectively as part of a team serving the academic and scholarly community, establish priorities, achieve goals; strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
