Director of Scouting and Recruitment Job at Peregrine Sports
MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB
Under the direction of the GM, the Director of Scouting and Recruitment will be responsible for player identification and recruitment. The position will manage a team of scouts for early identification and recruitment scouting as well as advanced scouting. The Director will be responsible for the scouting, evaluation, ranking and projection of potential player acquisitions based upon
the processing of reports and data gathered by himself and the scout staff. The role will oversee both scout staff development and education.
The Director of Scouting and Recruitment is responsible for quality assurance for the scouting and resulting data (reporting). The Director will coordinate with the General Manager, and Head Coach for all levels of the developmental pyramid to ensure maximization of opportunity and team resources. Finally, the position will oversee process development, logistics, targeting, and scheduling and bear responsibility for the scouting budget.
GENERIC DUTIES
- Oversee International scouting and recruitment
- Responsible for overseeing Domestic Scouting and Recruitment including a knowledge of MLS, USL, MLSNP, and NCAA levels.
- Develop target markets along with the GM and Head Coach: (youth/collegiate/professional) targets
- Ensure accurate and consistent presentation of all scout reports, as well as facilitate the process and procedure for information flow to the technical staff at all levels of the team’s pyramid
- Collaborate with coaches of recruitment targets, agents and families as appropriate to ensure rules and procedures are followed and player experience is maximized
- Oversee, guide, and communicate effectively with Scouting and Recruitment Manager ensuring scouting objectives and timelines are clear
- Recruit, hire, supervise, and provide technical guidance to all scouts
- Communicate effectively with all staff
- Ensure General Manager and Head Coach has everything they need to succeed
- Organize scouting meetings with Head Coach to ensure all targets and important scouting matters are discussed with coaching staff
- Focus on all scouting related responsibilities to allow the Head Coach more time with the team
SPECIFIC DUTIES
- Serve as a leader and resource to all team coaches and technical staff on matters pertaining to player scouting, recruitment, and monitoring of potential players of interest
- Assist in the hiring of and manages the members of the scout staff
- Create, direct, and implement Timbers’ recruitment development program to prepare and develop scouts who organically recruit to Timbers’ style and philosophy
- Develop scouting templates and procedures supporting Timbers’ style and philosophy
- Recruit, hire, train and assign staff scouts to regions and levels; assist player targeting
- Work with the Video Analyst for recruitment and advanced scouting purposes
- Work with the Academy and MLSNP staffs in supporting development recruitment
- Assist the GM, Head Coach, and technical staff with the development of the standards and methodology for scouts to use in identifying players
- Perform annual evaluations of all scouts
- Represent Timbers’ in professional manner on all club related travel and scouting trips
- Support the Timbers relationship with NCAA, NAIA and Youth Soccer Associations
- Maintain and enhance the Timbers relationship with MLS, MLSNP, USL, and the MLS Academy
- Assist youth development with player identification and tracking methodology
- Work with the GM and Head Coach to write and maintain the scouting performance plan
- Targets/options for GM and Head Coach, wages + transfer budget. It is imperative that the Head Coach has involvement, and supports decisions once all pre work of budget, salary, transfer fee, and agent fee has been completed
- Provide quality options at various prices that fit the needs of the Club. Succession planning is vital for every position in the Club. The Timbers GM will help lead in the selection of players in player drafts and work with the coaching staff and scouts (assist coaches) to build a strong team (for more details refer to scouting handbook)

COLLEGE
- Oversee all NCAA scouting and help manage college scouting network
- Work with college scouts to produce a NCAA summary shadow team composed of college players ranked by position including identifying non-seniors, academy affiliation and international players
- Develop NCAA summary shadow teams and distribute at the following times to the GM and coaching staff when necessary
- Help lead the MLS Superdraft process including meetings prior to draft to discuss targets, strategy, and objectives
REQUIRED SKILLS

Five years’ experience as a scout or equivalent in a club, collegiate, professional and/or State/Regional/National institution
Five years’ experience as an scout or equivalent in a club, collegiate, professional and/or State/Regional/National institution(s)
Demonstrated administrative and organizational abilities to manage multiple programs and priorities, including event and long-range planning
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Knowledge of MLS and American Soccer landscape is important
Bilingual (English/Spanish) helpful but not required
