SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

The Director, Engineering & Technology is responsible for managing and deploying resources to execute capital and continuous improvement projects for infrastructure, downstream, and blow mold operations. This role will have Technology Managers as direct reports and be responsible for those departments’ goals, plant technical support, new business projects, sustainability projects execution, and continuous improvement projects. The Director, Engineering & Technology will standardize project management tools & communication including project economics, trials, documentation of bottle specifications, processing, and equipment operations procedures.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identify skill set needs and resources across the business to improve and develop engineering and plant team members to provide technical expertise in equipment processing, mold design, drawing approvals, machine selection, and machine set-up.
  • Coach and develop technology teams to document cost, request for quotes, technical requirements for bottle specifications, safety, quality, and production information to clearly communicate cost, timing, and success criteria internally and externally.
  • Work with technology teams to identify and share best practices between plants and standardize approaches where applicable in maintenance, spare parts, and operation.
  • Responsible for Engineering & Technology department goals, budget, and forecast.
  • Coach and develop automation and blow machine technology managers to document training, work instructions, processing, start-up, and changeover parameters within their teams.
  • Develop technology teams as center of excellence in blow & downstream equipment and bottle design and machine selection to provide troubleshooting and lead new business installations and start-ups.
  • Develop and coach team members to complete hands-on installations, contractor management, vendor management, and standardized project management communication.
  • Work with supply chain, operations, and engineering departments to identify preferred equipment suppliers for our operations based on technical fit, cost, and plant support.
  • Work with commercial, pricing, supply chain, and operations to provide cost inputs to new business opportunities and document all specifications with plant & engineering teams.
  • Work with safety and quality teams to ensure a safe work environment for our employees and all safety and quality equipment considerations are aligned within the teams.
  • Ensure all projects have success metrics identified at project start and track scope changes, assumptions, and timeline impact.
  • Standardize technology teams processes and documentation including trip reports, competitive bids for outside services and vendors, vendor technical comparisons, request for quotes, factory acceptance tests, and equipment qualifications and acceptance testing.
  • Use data mining tools including OEE entries by plant and automated maintenance program data to identify cost savings opportunities and expected returns by technology. Collaborate with plant, engineering, and finance to prioritize and execute projects identified.

EDUCATION:
Required: BS in Mechanical, Chemical, or Plastics Engineering, MS/MBA preferred

EXPERIENCE:
Required:

  • 3-5 years salaried management experience in technical field, packaging & plastic processing preferred
  • >10 years track record of successful management Engineering projects including development of and tracking of project success criteria based on economics - new equipment installations, plant infrastructure projects, and/or new facility design

Preferred:

  • Prior experience in operations in the plastic containers industry
  • Expertise in plastic bottle design, mold development, and blow-molding or injection plastics technology
  • Demonstrated cost estimate development and installation experience in new plant builds, plant infrastructure projects and new technologies
  • Expertise in plant infrastructure – building and utilities, air compressors, warehousing.
  • Expertise in plastic bottle handling, inspection systems and automated packing.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Analytical problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated Project Management skills
  • Ability to interpret plant layout designs, machine, and bottle drawings
  • Proven ability to develop, coach, and lead multiple departments on standardized approach to new business and process improvement

TRAVEL: Approximately 25% to Silgan plants, vendors, and customer sites. Will change depending on stage of projects in installation & support.
