Job Description
Job Title: Director of Communications Exemption Status: Exempt
Status: Part-Time (3 days/week = 24 hours/week)
Department/Location: Diocese of Tucson Pastoral Center /Tucson, AZ
Primary Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Bishop and the administrative guidance of the Moderator of the Curia, this position is responsible primarily for: responding to the communication and information needs of the Bishop and diocesan departments and offices; supporting the pastoral ministry of the Bishop with creative use of communication and information technology; responding to the communication and information needs, as requested and approved, of the parishes and schools of the Diocese and agencies affiliated with the Diocese; and supporting the community relations efforts of the Bishop and the Diocese. The Employee shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic Teaching both academically and behaviorally while at work and in his/her personal life, “…Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.” (Eph. 4:1)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Recognize and support the unique Catholic Mission of the Diocese by speaking, acting, and instructing consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. The employee may not espouse, in word or deed, any doctrine inconsistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Give evidence of living Gospel values by being an active member of a faith community and being open to the importance of a personal faith journey; strive to model the teaching of Jesus by attitude and example.
  • Assist the Bishop with research, writing, editing, digital photography, formatting, and distribution of the weekly Monday Memo.
  • Assist the Bishop with research and writing for presentations, talks, and articles.
  • Provide administrative guidance and support to the managing editor of The New Vision, the monthly newspaper of the Diocese of Tucson.
  • Conceptualize and produce audio, video, presentation, and Web projects.
  • Develop, write, and edit promotional materials, scripts, presentations, reports, statements, letters, news media advisories and releases, and public information advisories for the Bishop and the Diocese, and, as requested and approved, for the parishes and schools of the Diocese and agencies affiliated with the Diocese.
  • Function as content Webmaster for diocesetucson.org and idiocese.org by developing and maintaining content.
  • Assist the news media in coverage of the Roman Catholic Church, the Bishop, the Diocese, the parishes and schools of the Diocese, and agencies affiliated with the Diocese.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and maintenance of a crisis communications plan for the Diocese.
  • Establish and maintain contacts and positive relationships with news media and the public relations and public information offices of non-profit, government, faith-based, and for-profit entities.
  • Provide support for the audio-visual needs of diocesan events and meetings and as requested and approved, for events and meetings of the parishes and schools of the Diocese and agencies affiliated with the Diocese.
  • Develop and maintain the budget of the Office of Communications.
  • Provide consultative support regarding communication and information needs to the Bishop and the Diocese, and as requested and approved, to the parishes and schools of the Diocese and agencies affiliated with the Diocese.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical and Mental Requirements: Requires normal coordination and manual dexterity; normal mental, visual, and aural ability; ability to lift as required in a normal office environment.
Required Physical Activities: Walking, sitting, standing, stooping, reaching, talking, handling, hearing, carrying, and keyboarding.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Must have a working knowledge of, and a strong commitment to the mission of fostering lay leadership in the Catholic Church; must also be a practicing Roman Catholic in full communion with the Church.
  • Relevant to the responsibilities of the position, the ability to demonstrate knowledge of the mission, teachings, and structures of the Roman Catholic Church; the mission, priorities, and structures of the Diocese; and issues relevant to the Roman Catholic Church and to the Diocese.
  • Excellent communications skills, including writing, public speaking, and presentations.
  • Excellent human relations and interpersonal skills; must be a self-starter and be well-organized; must be a team player.
  • Be able to travel and be available for evening and weekend work as necessary.
  • Be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Flexibility in assessing needs and strategies and adapting appropriately in a ministerial environment.
  • Be able to successfully complete a criminal history and background check.
  • Have professional bearing and be clean and neat in personal appearance.
Education and Experience:
  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree, with courses in communications, public relations, mass media, marketing, and journalism
  • A minimum of five years' experience (or a combination of experience) in broadcast public affairs; broadcast news; newspaper editing and reporting; non-profit or government public information and community relations; private sector advertising and public relations; video production; desktop publishing; special event communication coordination and facilitation; development and fund-raising communication.
Special Skills Required:
  • Proficiency in the use of Windows operating systems.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft and Apple word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
  • Proficiency in the use of video editing software.
  • Proficiency in the use of digital audio editing software.
  • Proficiency in the use of Photoshop graphics and photo editing software.
  • Proficiency in the use of digital video and digital still cameras.
  • Proficiency in the use of digital audio recorders.
Other Skills and Abilities:
  • Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
