DIGITAL FORENSICS INVESTIGATOR Job at University of Wisconsin–Madison
The digital forensics investigator has the skills, knowledge and abilities of a general police investigator and additional skills, knowledge and abilities to use investigative and analytical techniques to detect and track all kinds of criminal activity that takes place on digital devices, computers, other technological devices and the internet and social media. This technical and specialized position works under the general supervision of a police captain. This position must have the highest professional, ethical and moral standards in performing this work given the often sensitive nature of the information accessed or collected as evidence.
This investigator must be able to collect and preserve digital/electronic evidence or direct other in the collection and preservation of the evidence. Position requires a high degree of investigative knowledge; to prepare complete, detailed written reports of all investigations in a timely manner; to present reports to the offices of the District Attorney, State Attorney General, or United States Attorney for review for the issuance of search warrants, subpoenas or criminal charges; to arrest persons named in warrants or when probable exists for the arrest; and to testify in court. This position also performs a combination of analysis and support duties of great complexity and requires the mastery of techniques and tools in their assigned area and are required to ensure the security of systems and confidential data in compliance with all rules and regulations.
- 20% Conducts criminal investigations to identify perpetrators, preserve the rights of victims, and prevent crime at the institution
- 10% Serves as an investigator in a specialized unit formed to investigate specific crimes on a continuing basis, i.e. narcotics and gang activity
- 10% Utilizes analytical techniques to detect and track down criminal activity that takes place in various mediums which may include on digital devices, computers, and the internet
- 10% Prepares and submits accurate written reports of all investigations conducted in association with all applicable laws, policies, and procedures
- 15% Testifies in court or administrative proceedings regarding statements and any other facts of information
- 10% Creates and maintains positive relationships with institutional affiliates, legal entities, social service organizations, civic groups, and the news media
- 10% Provides uniformed police services at special events
- 10% Provides guidance and mentoring to police officers in conducting investigations, executing search warrants and subpoenas, and interview and interrogation techniques
- 5% Required to work special events and assignments as designated by the Department.

Minimum of three years of experience required in one of the following areas:
- Sworn police officer
- Detective/investigator
- Digital forensics investigator
Current Wisconsin Law Enforcement Certification or have been Wisconsin Law Enforcement certified within the past two years.
Meet all UW Risk Management criteria to operate university vehicles (no more than two moving violations, operating after revocation or suspension, or operating without a valid driver's license within the two years and/or have more than six demerit points assessed on his or her driver's license and have a valid Wisconsin Driver's License upon appointment).
Must not have any unpardoned felony convictions, any domestic violence convictions, any other criminal convictions within the past five years, convictions for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in the past five years.
Licenses/Certifications and/or Trainings (Preferred):
- Mobile Device Forensics Certifications and/or training on Industry Standard Tools (Such as Cellebrite Certified Operator (CCO), Analyst (CCPA) and/or Mobile Examiner (CCME) or similar)
- Computer Forensics Certifications and/or training on Industry Standard Tools (Such as OpenText/EnCase Certified Examiner (EnCE), Magnet Certified Forensics Examiner (MCFE), X-Ways or similar)
- Other Digital Forensics Certifications and/or Trainings from Industry Standard Organizations (SANS, IACIS, NW3C, LEVA, NCFI or similar)
- A Bachelors or advanced degree in Digital Forensics or an Associate's Degree in Digital Forensics or Computer Information Systems preferred.

In general, the hours will be during regular business hours Monday-Friday and designed to meet the needs of the university. Work hours outside of regular business hours will be required during critical time periods related to various cases or special events/assignments. Digital Forensics Detectives are required to serve as the on call Detective on a rotating on-call schedule. The final schedule worked will be discussed and agreed upon with the Captain of Investigative Services.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
