Are you looking for a rewarding career in law enforcement? Lewis and Clark County Sherriff’s Office is hiring for Detention Officers to work in the newly remodeled jail.
Detention Officers are responsible for ensuring safe and smooth operations of the jail. This includes supervising and monitoring incarcerated individuals, transporting, and overseeing the daily activities of the individuals.
Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency, be able to successfully pass a criminal background investigation and a thorough background check and successfully complete one hundred sixty (160) hours of P.O.S.T certified Correction/Detention officer basic course and maintain certification.
Candidates who meet the minimum requirements will be invited to test on November 28, 2022. Candidates who pass the test, will be interviewed on November 28, 2022. Additional interviews may be scheduled for November 29, 2022.

Position Description Summary
Under general supervision of the Detention Captain, this position performs duties related to incarcerating and caring for prisoners.
Essential Functions
- Completes booking forms;
- Takes inked fingerprint impressions and identification photographs;
- Completes disposition records, medical records, prescription drug records, property records and inventories, and court records;
- Conducts inmate searches;
- Conducts fire, safety and sanitation inspections;
- Maintains continuous supervision and surveillance over detention center activities (i.e., work crews, security risk prisoners, etc.);
- Receives and reports inmate complaints;
- Supervises prisoners and visitors;
- Supervises prisoner phone calls;
- Provides meals and commissary for inmates;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Other Duties
- Assists clerical staff in duties related to receiving and processing of police records;
- Assists with processing warrants and civil papers;
- May escort prisoners to locations within and outside of detention facility;
- May transport prisoners
Special Requirements
- Able to successfully complete one hundred sixty (160) hours of P.O.S.T. certified Correction/Detention officer basic course and maintain certification;
- Able to obtain a valid Montana drivers’ license within (30) thirty days of hire;
- Successfully pass a criminal background investigation and a thorough background check;
- Be of good moral character as determined by a thorough background check;
- Be a citizen of the United States or Resident Alien;
- Be at least 18 years of age;
- Be a high school graduate or have been issued an equivalency certificate by the Superintendent of Public Instruction, or by an appropriate issuing agency of another state or of the federal government.

- Knowledge of Montana Code Annotated, Detention Center orders, Detention Center policies and procedures, and Lewis and Clark County Policies;
- Public safety and liability responsibilities;
- Detention practices and procedures;
- Legal and court procedures;
- Constitutional and civil rights;
- CJIN/NCIC policies, practices and procedures.
Examples of Skills and Abilities
- Operate computer systems and related software, including word processing and spreadsheet programs;
- Access and use CJIN/NCIC systems according to prescribed standards and regulations;
- Use office equipment;
- Use detention tools according to prescribed standards;
- Understand and apply rules, regulations, and policies according to office standards;
- Observe prescribed radio codes and protocols;
- Prepare written reports according to prescribed standards;
- Maintain records according to prescribed standards;
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, prisoners, community representatives, and citizens.
Physical Demands
Duties are generally performed in an environment where some hazards and discomforts are inherent to the position. There is occasional activity that exposes incumbent to full range of physical demands and environmental conditions. Requires standing, walking and sitting for extended periods of time. May be required to physically lift/carry/restrain inmates. Must be prepared in self-defense techniques and qualified in the use of OC spray, Taser, CPR and Basic First Aid. Must be able to move or lift documents and materials weighing up to 30 pounds with occasional need to lift or move materials up to or in excess of 100 pounds.
Qualifications
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Associates degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or related preferred. Must be able to successfully complete one hundred sixty (160) hours of P.O.S.T. certified Correction/Detention officer basic course.
