Position Summary
Provide professional dental services and assist in the administrative and professional direction of dental services within Mecklenburg County. This position directs clinical dental patient care programs and assists with dental health community outreach programs throughout the County; provides assessment, diagnosis, treatment, education and referral for pediatric patients ages 0-17 years in a dental office setting.
Essential Functions
· Diagnose and treat problems with a patient’s teeth, gingiva, and other parts of the oral cavity, providing advice and instruction on taking care of teeth and gingiva and on diet choices that affect oral health
· Establish appropriate dental plans and follow-up plans
· Complete necessary charts and records for patients to accurately record services rendered
· Evaluate patient medical history and determine treatment plans for either ongoing or emergency dental treatment or advice
· Interpret radiology, examine patients and provide basic and comprehensive dental services
· Perform preventive, restorative, surgical (minor), or endodontic for primary teeth procedures
· Provide educational opportunities for dental students and interns
· Serve as dental consultant to other staff and lecture on dental health
· Participate in community health and dental related projects
· Provide appropriate postoperative instructions to patients and caregivers
· Mecklenburg County Health Department Employees: Respond in cases of urgent and/or emergent events that require public health interventions. Employees may be trained for and assigned duties unrelated to their regular work; work outside normal business hours and workdays and/or in a different work location may be required. Emergency events include, but are not limited to, communicable disease outbreaks, severe weather situations (e.g. snow or ice storms, tornados, hurricanes), natural disasters (e.g. earthquakes), fire, or power outages, and acts of terrorism.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
Minimum of one year of experience in pediatric dental setting and/or completion of a General or Pediatric Residency Program
Ability to serve patients in an Operating Room setting
Education:
Graduation from an accredited dental school (DDS or DMD).

Licenses and Certifications
·· NC Dentist Licensure
· Certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) by the American Heart Association that is valid for at least 90 days after hire. Maintenance of this certification is required and as funds are available may be supported as part of employment.
· May require a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License
· Current hospital privileges or ability to obtain privileges within 90 days of employment
Preferred Qualifications
· Completion of Pediatric Dental Residency Program
· Ability to serve patients in an Operating Room setting.

· Blood borne pathogen regulations and standard precautions sufficient to be able to protect self and others from infectious diseases
· Radiation Safety Protection Program and how to implement the standards associated with ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable)
