New Hope Community Medical Center is a specialty medical practice providing outpatient opiate and alcohol addiction treatment services. New Hope Community Medical Center's care model includes medical care, counseling, comprehensive toxicology testing, case management and medical management of psychiatric medications. New Hope Community Medical Center provides compassionate and individualized treatment programs to support those with substance use disorder.
Summary:
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated substance abuse counselor to help provide direction and support for our patients. In this role, you will be responsible for developing treatment and recovery plans and identifying behaviors that impede rehabilitation. You may also be required to facilitate individual and group therapy sessions.
To ensure success, substance abuse counselors should be familiar with the latest treatment methods and collaborate with other mental health care specialists. Top-notch candidates have excellent clinical knowledge and demonstrable counseling experience.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Associate degree in chemical dependency counseling, or a bachelor's degree with coursework in chemical dependency.
- Master's degree in counseling preferred.
- Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), or similar.
- Previous experience with the treatment of substance abuse disorders.
- Familiarity with electronic health record systems like AVATAR would be advantageous.
- Experience with co-occurring health and mental health problems.
- Application of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services’ (SAMHSA) best practice indicators.
- In-depth knowledge of drug and alcohol testing to monitor treatment plans and medical instructions.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and a compassionate nature.
Role and Responsibilities
- Managing all aspects of a case from date of entry to date of discharge.
- Evaluating patients' physical and mental behaviors.
- Developing appropriate treatment and recovery plans.
- Facilitating individual and group therapy sessions.
- Monitoring patients over time to access treatment progress.
- Collaborating with psychiatrists, doctors, nurses, social workers, and departments of correction.
- Identifying behaviors that interfere with treatment and recovery.
- Assisting primary caregivers to manage addiction-related behavior.

- Computer literacy; typing skills, knowledge of EMRs (Athena Health Systems preferred), MS Word, MS Excel
- Ability to work with individuals and groups from diverse populations; bilingual/bicultural preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to effectively manage time to meet deadlines
- Represent the organization effectively and professionally when participating with community members
- Serve as a role model for other staff members to help maintain professionalism in the workplace including professional boundaries and codes of ethics
- Maintain and support the mission and goals of the organization
- Ability to build strong teams to meet performance goals
- Closes client files when client completes and use JCAHO closed client form after insuring all necessary paperwork is completed and in files
· Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate office equipment, including but not limited to keyboard, copier, telephone, fax machine and calculator.
· Requires a normal range of hearing and vision, and the ability to communicate clearly with office personnel and community.
· Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. May require some travel to include driving or flying.
· Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks, such as operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals.
· Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
· Moderate physical effort. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 50 pounds, at least 6 hours of standing and walking. Ability to assist patients getting onto an examination table, in and out of a wheelchair.
· Requires ability to lift up to 50lbs, push and pull 75lbs.
· Some bending, stretching, lifting and stooping may be required.
