What to Expect

The Construction Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible for driving, influencing, and achieving EHS process excellence, regulatory compliance, and overall risk reduction throughout Commercial, Industrial and Utility Energy product deployments within North America.

This position reports to the Industrial Deployment Regional Leader and will ensure world-class safety standards are met and sustained across operations. The role will interface with senior regional leadership, front-line operational staff, contracting partners, and other related teams within Tesla to drive and support continuous improvement throughout Tesla’s design and deployment of energy storage systems and electric vehicle chargers.

This position is based in Fremont or Burbank, California and requires frequent and extended travel to areas dependent on business needs.

What You’ll Do
  • Develop and maintain a partnership with and serve as a key advisor on EHS matters to Tesla Energy business operations leaders and stakeholders, associates, EHS members, and contracting partners.
  • Serve as a technical expert to identify critical risks, including legal compliance requirements and responsibilities in all phases of product deployment and commissioning, including specific support in the safe design and engineering, installation and construction, and commissioning and operation of Tesla energy products.
  • Support the development, implementation, and execution of short and long-term plans for Tesla's Safety programs for Utility and Commercial Deployments.
  • Identification of operational gaps and creative solution facilitation, including identifying key stakeholders and driving innovative EHS solutions, electrical and otherwise, with cross-functional teams.
  • Respond to and investigate EHS events and support the learning from events by determining causes and preventative actions with management and business teams.
  • Drive the implementation of Human & Organisational Performance principles within operations and electrical incident investigations.
  • Conduct proactive and zero-blame, learning-focused field observations to verify that work in progress meets EHS goals and document findings; review improvement opportunities with supervisors, operations, EHS and other stakeholders.
  • Lead and support routine and ad hoc EHS meetings with stakeholders to communicate improvements and changes, event learnings, actions, and performance compared to company and department EHS goals.
  • Be a visible model in the field and teach, train and coach business teams and support staff on fundamental EHS concepts and principles to reduce risk, and influence, inspire and empower business teams and staff to minimise the risk per Tesla EHS vision, values and principles.
What You’ll Bring
  • Have a minimum of 3 years of progressive Environment, Health, and Safety experience in organisations at scale and an educational degree in an EHS-related field or other related fields of study.
  • Experience working directly within the electric power generation, transmission, storage, or distribution industries. Detailed knowledge of the functionality of lithium-ion battery storage is preferred.
  • Practical experience in construction safety, working at heights, electrical safety and environmental risks, and knowledge of local, provincial, and national regulatory agencies and requirements.
  • Knowledge and practical, hands-on experience in developing and deploying safety programs under the requirements of OSHA and NFPA70.
  • Demonstrate the ability to execute the role’s responsibilities in a fast-paced and growing global organisation in a ‘first-principles’ approach.
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to positively interact with the full range of senior business management and regulators, frontline workers and 3rd party clients.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, great attention to detail, problem-solving skills, multi-task, prioritising, and working in a highly fast-paced environment, and a demonstrated ability to perform duties independently and remotely with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate will also be a team player who can be proactive, creative, and innovative in approaching challenges.
  • Ability to execute complex, multidisciplinary projects and assignments and assume accountability for results, including experience in training and educating company employees in EHS initiatives.
  • Able to problem-solve and develop short and long-term goals; Building relationships through collaboration both within and outside of EHS with the ability to influence and communicate effectively with all levels of management creatively and proactively.
  • Have experience and an understanding of EHS regulatory systems and policy within the United States (+ Canada, Mexico, and South America, preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience applying government and regulatory environmental, health or safety regulations in various construction, operation, and service applications.
  • Expert in MS Office 365 Suite, including SharePoint, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
