Title: Communications Coordinator – HIV and STI Programs

Work Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live in Michigan

Purpose: This position is responsible for coordinating and developing language, website, social media, and printed resources to impact each strategy area within the MDHHS Bureau of HIV and STI Programs (BHSP).

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with program staff across the bureau to develop compelling content and design of communications aimed at Michiganders, medical providers, health insurances and other local public health partners.
  • Assure all publications contain accurate, updated, and current information.
  • Identify opportunities to promote adherence to CDC and MDHHS recommendations related to awareness campaigns, prevention, screening, and diagnosing treatment.
  • Collaborating with the MDHHS media office to post messages on the Department social media and websites.
  • Serve as liaison to the MDHHS Communications Office.
  • Manage complex approval processes within the Department, ensuring all publications obtain correct approval for publication and distribution.
  • Develop and coordinate press releases, social media messages and responding to media inquiries.
  • Develop emergency response communications as needed during emergency response situations.
  • Serve as point of contact for requests from outside partners for presentations and comment.
  • Coordinate purchase, development, and shipping of print resources.
  • Create and distribute an annual Detroit and Statewide medical provider pamphlet to promote data and upcoming health events.
  • Assist with writing narratives and budgets for grants/contracts to meet Federal and State funding requirements.
  • Support grant reporting and assisting with writing narratives for communications projects and tasks and goals.
  • Assist with organizational change management (OCM) and employee engagement communications.
  • Work closely with staff across the bureau to revise outdated communications.
  • Work with staff to facilitate ideas for communication projects that will successfully promote the mission of BHSP.
  • Offer technical assistance and support to BHSP funded agencies on communication projects and goals.
  • Work closely with bureau and division directors on internal communications.
  • Participate in all required meetings and trainings, including confidentiality and security trainings and sign oath of confidentiality.
  • Represent the best interest of the department, MDHHS and MPHI at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s required. Preferred candidates will have a degree in a public health related field.

Experience: Three years of professional experience in an equivalent position of this type. Experience in using social media to promote program expansion and development.
Knowledge or experience in capacity building theory/practice in various community settings.

  • Ability to work independently, as well as in team situations, with a high level of self- initiative and accountability.
  • Excellent oral and written communications are critical.
  • Current with all bureau subject matter and translate information into format to effectively share with partners, community, etc.
  • Ability to complete tasks in timely manner and handle multiple tasks at one time with minimal or no supervision.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with email/internet browser software.
  • Competency in Adobe software (Acrobat DC, Illustrator, InDesign)
  • Competency in graphic design and video development (Canva, Vyond)
  • Ability to maintain high levels of confidentiality.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Position is remote/virtual with occasional in-person meetings usually in Lansing. Requires some in office work in Lansing to ship health promotional materials. Requires valid vehicle operator’s license where needed to perform duties of the position. Frequent deadlines. Will require both in-state and out-of-state travel. Must be a Michigan resident.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: Performs as a critical member of a team of professionals working to reduce transmission of Sexually Transmitted Diseases, including HIV.
