  • Reviews Emergency Room medical records to code accurately all diagnoses and/or procedures using coding guidelines.
  • Performs charging and data entry for each ED record to bill procedures done in the ED: E/M levels for facility fees. This must be done with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Enters all codes correctly and accurately into the appropriate electronic system
  • Keep abreast of all in process accounts and follows up with physicians for missing documentation/information to code the account timely
  • Follows up on any accounts that need follow up
  • Collaborates with appropriate personnel to assess coding needs when volume increases so that all accounts are coded/billed timely
  • Examines information given to ensure all needed information is present and maintains good communication with the physicians, Medical Records Staff, and all personnel throughout the hospital so that coding can be done accurately and timely as needed without communication breakdowns
  • Contacts the appropriate personnel when there is missing documentation and needed information from physicians or other departments prior to coding so that the coding can be done accurately and as scheduled
  • Performs all aspects of the ED coding including facility, charges, data entry with an accuracy of 95% or better
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements:
  • Formal outpatient coding/billing training program
  • CPC, CCS, CCA, RHIA or RHIT certifications or certification eligible, must obtain within 6 months
  • College level courses or equivalent in anatomy, physiology and medical terminology
  • At least 2 years demonstrated ED diagnostic and procedural coding experience, preferably in a computerized/electronic environment in a medical center
  • 2 years of related ED or facility level E&M coding experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Proficient computer skills, including experience with clinical information systems for accessing health information in an electronic environment
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of the official ICD-10-CM outpatient coding guidelines. Knowledge and understanding of the CPT Assistant and Coding Clinics, Faye Brown
