Job Description:

CNC Machine Operator

  • Person interacts with the machine, puts in offsets, loads parts, and unloads parts, measures things
  • Doesn’t do true machining where they say “here is a piece of steel, here is the blueprint, now go make something”, these people don’t do that
  • They just run the equipment, troubleshoot where needed and escalate any problems
  • These are big complex parts that may take anywhere from 4 hours to 40 hours to machine
  • Value of the parts are anywhere from $3,000 to $100,000
  • These people do not do programming and figuring things out
  • Challenge is a Machinist expects to do some of that work, meaning that they feel that they have to figure things out, but they don’t do any of that.
  • Machines are unique and most people haven’t worked these control pipes before, so there will be some training on that, and they will learn the Siemens controls switches
  • People with lathe or mill experience and schooling Associate degree or any type of machine certificate would be a significant plus
  • Manufacturing experience is good, but must be a person that pays attention to detail and willing to learn
  • Need to be detail oriented.
  • Interview process is 1 and done. It will be an onsite preferred but could be a team if not able to due to work commitment. Expect 20-30 minutes regardless of onsite/teams.
  • Internal onboarding can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks depending on a persons background.

Hiring 10 – 13 people

2nd shift 3:00 pm – 11:30 pm ($2.00 shift differential)

3rd shift 11:00 pm – 7:30 am ($2.50 shift differential)

A machinist is responsible for a variety of machine-specific functions—from setting-up equipment, loading materials and operating machinery, to monitoring and optimizing efficiency, maintaining machines and performing quality checks. A machinist will typically have the knowledge and ability to operate and maintain several machines.

Key Job Elements Duties and Responsibilities • Operates various machines as part of the production process to produce parts for the locomotive industry in accordance with AAR, customer specifications, company guidelines and checklists. Perform all duties and responsibilities in compliance with PR safety policies; • Operate manual machines including horizontal mills, engine lathes, and manual grinders to produce locomotive motor parts and axles; • Use precision gauges and instruments such as micrometers to determine and follow customers specifications; • Maintain specifications by observing, drilling, grooving and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes; • Operate overhead cranes and forklifts; • Other duties as assigned; • Perform all duties and responsibilities within time standards allowed. Advanced Duties and Responsibilities • Maintain specifications by observing, drilling, grooving and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes. Troubleshoot and repair various machines


Qualifications, Experience, Education • Specific site qualifications and progression may apply, consult with local team; • Skill Level I -0-1 years of experience; • Skill Level I – 1-2 years of experience or Technical Degree; • Skill Level III – 2-5 years of experience and Technical Certifications; • Skill Level IV – 5+ years of experience, Technical or specific experience. Preferred Skills • Possess expertise and/or certification in Advanced Welding Techniques; • Hold Certification in Non-Destructive Testing; • Possess high level of machining Aptitude; • Read and interpret blueprints and drawings. Essential and Physical Activities Functions: • Strength – Position requires lifting of 50lbs. Requires stamina and strength to work in tight and confined spaces while installing or repair machinery and components; • Motion – Position requires standing majority of the day. Frequent walking, squatting, kneeling and climbing of steps and stairs; • Vision/Hearing Requirements – Position is exposed to high levels of noise and vibration from using tools. Position is exposed to cutting torches and welding operations. The use of proper PPE is required. The Position requires the ability to read QWI and schematics and understand instructions; • Work Environment – Position can be located inside or outside, dependent on situation. When inside, the employees are subject to temperature extremes in non-temperature-controlled environments. When outside employees are subject to all weather elements. In both cases employees will work with oils and other lubricants; • Emotional Demands – Employee is expected to work and cooperate as part of team in order to meet production requirements; • Safety – Position is safety sensitive as it requires working in and around live tracks and operation and repair of heavy equipment. Position requires strict adherence to safety policies (i.e blue flag) and use of all PPE.
