Job Summary: The Patient Care Technician (PCT) functions as a nursing assistant in performing duties as assigned by the Registered Nurse (RN). The primary role and responsibilities of the PCT include assisting or performing activities of daily living, room maintenance, positioning, transferring of patients and obtaining vital signs, and obtaining blood and Glucometers readings on the surgical unit for adolescent to geriatric patients.

Job Specifications/Qualifications

One year experience preferred or pending registration with Oaklawn Center on Aging Nurse Aide Training Program.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Certified Nursing Assistant through the Arkansas Office of Long Term Care will be sponsored by NPMC for qualified candidates

BLS may be obtained within 90 days of employment

Education

High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties or task may be requested or assigned by immediate supervisor, his/her designee, or other management/supervisor.

Care of the Patient:

  • Complete patient care (may include V.S., I&Os, heights, weights, ADL and other patient care related assignments in a safe, efficient and timely manner
  • Documents patient care and other assignments according to the department’s guidelines
  • Recognizes and reports changes in patient condition to licensed staff
  • Assists with admission, transfer and discharge as directed by the Registered Nurse
  • Communicates patient/family information to health care team members to assist with individualizing the patient plan of care
  • Practices universal precautions/isolation, techniques according to hospital policy
  • Recognizes unsafe and emergency situations and reacts appropriate
  • Provides relief for patient families and may sit with patients who are Suicidal, Homicidal, combative, confused, distressed or at risk of falling

Supports Services:

  • Assists with maintaining clean and orderly patient/department environment
  • Performs unit secretary duties as needed. This may include but not limited to clean charts, stamping requisitions, answering the phone, obtaining post discharge appointments
  • Demonstrates competency in using the computer system (i.e. physician orders, supplies, ancillary service requests and appointments
  • Answers call lights promptly using appropriate communication skills to screen, record and route calls. Messages to appropriate personnel/departments
  • Responds appropriately to patient/family requests

Professional Performance:

  • Practices cost effective use of supplies
  • Utilizes available communication tools (staff meetings, bulletin board) to remain informed
  • Attends 80% of the unit meetings
  • Remains current with certifications (BLS and CNA if appropriate)
  • Consistently demonstrates that new knowledge and skills gained from education are incorporated in actual clinical practice
  • Shares knowledge with nursing staff and other members of the health care team
