Dam Safety Engineer- Upstate NY
Brookfield is seeking a professional engineer with either structural, geotechnical or hydrology/hydraulic engineering expertise for a Dam Safety Engineer position in upstate New York. Knowledge and experience with Federal and/or State Dam Safety Guidelines is a plus. The position requires a strong desire to grow your expertise, with other coworkers, in the civil engineering discipline on clean and renewable hydropower projects in upstate New York.
The responsibilities include dam safety inspections, performing and reviewing engineering analyses, developing technical reports, and construction observations on steel, concrete and earth structures to support Brookfield’s Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE) program. The position requires occasional travel and long workdays to beautiful and remote sites in upstate New York as well as office work responsibilities.
The Dam Safety Engineer position would report to the Senior Dam Safety Engineer and the Director of Asset Management. Collaboration with Brookfield regulatory compliance team, operations staff, project managers and other dam safety engineers is required. In addition, establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with external engineering consultants, contractors, and Federal/ State Dam Safety Engineers is necessary.
Responsibilities
- The ability to identify, recognize, understand, and prioritize dam safety related issues on complex structures.
- Supports the Operations crew, Dam Safety Team, and the Director of Asset Management by advising and recommending effective and viable short- and long-term solutions actions to alleviate and reduce dam safety risk.
- Performs field inspections, investigations, and engineering analyses on embankments, concrete structures, powerhouses, canals, penstocks, and other water retaining structures.
- Performs, coordinates and reviews hydrologic and hydraulic studies, slope stability and seepage analyses, and stability analysis of concrete gravity structures.
- Participates in FERC Part 12D dam safety inspections including Potential Failure Mode (PFM) Analyses and Risk Analyses.
- Reviews and interprets instrumentation data, and inspection findings
- Documents dam safety modifications and improvements, and operating procedures.
- Writes, reviews and updates dam safety documents including Dam Safety Monitoring Plans and Reports (DSSMP/R), Emergency Action Plans (EAP), Supporting Technical Information Documents (STID), and Quality Control and Inspection Plans (QCIP).
- Review and develop construction drawings and specifications for dam safety related projects including slope remediation, concrete repairs, spillway or gate modifications.
- Interface with federal and state dam safety regulators and consultants on field inspections, developing remediation concepts, and project review meetings.
Required Skills
- Experience with civil/structural engineering and design codes, standards and practices.
- Experience with federal or state dam safety regulations related to the design, construction, analysis and maintenance of dams and other hydraulic and conveyance structures.
- Knowledge of one or more of the following disciplines: hydrology and hydraulics, structural engineering, or geotechnical engineering.
- Expertise in water-retaining structures, including flood studies, slope stability and seepage analyses, structural design and inspection of steel and concrete structures, construction, dam instrumentation, and flow control structures is a plus.
- Strong engineering along with effective oral/written communication skills.
- Be innovative, self-directed and collaborative. Effective organizational skills, including the ability to independently prioritize and plan work and manage competing deadlines.
- Occasional travel to remote sites is required.
- This position requires the successful candidate to have a valid driver's license. A motor vehicle report (MVR) that shows driving history, including information about your driver's license, will be required if you are selected as the successful candidate.
Required Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in civil engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License in New York State.
- Relevant experience in one of the following disciplines; hydrology and hydraulics, structural engineering, or geotechnical engineering.
- Excellent computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
- Experience or training with HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, Geostudio software, Plaxis or RISA-3D preferred but not required. AutoCAD or GIS skills preferred but not required.
