Job Summary:


The CFO is responsible for directing the financial strategies, analysis, forecasting and budget management. The position provides oversight for all aspects of accounting operations such as receivables, payables, payroll, and financial reporting and oversees all financial related matters, coordinating, preparing, and reviewing all annual financial reports.


Using effective communication, collaboration and time management, the CFO provides internal support to the Executive Leadership Team, Operations, and other home office departments. Externally, this position is the relationship manager for banking and external CPA firm, providing reliable financial data and analytics to all shareholders, including the Board of Directors for the company.


We are looking for an executive level leader who can provide strategic thought leadership in guiding the company toward continued profitability and long-term success. The ideal candidate is a dependable professional with a broad knowledge of accounting principles in the heavy civil/marine construction industry and with the ability to effectively communicate with principles and non-financial personnel. The individual must be willing and able to perform each accounting function as needed to ensure accurate and timely reporting of all accounting functions.

Education


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting finance or relevant field, or equivalent education and experience

Experience


  • At least 10 years financial management experience in the heavy civil/marine construction industry
  • Demonstrated experience
    • Serving as a business unit level chief financial officer, trusted advisor, and strategic partner to the CFO, CEO, and Board within a growth-focused company
    • In finance, tax, financial planning, analysis, reporting, M&A, management information systems, cash management, budgeting, forecasting, project management, as well as the development, implementation, and presentation of related reports and statements
    • Building and leading high-performing finance and accounting teams
    • Helping a company grow and evolve through acquisitions and a financial, operational build-out to support rapid growth and future expansions
    • Managing multiple state sales, use and property taxes
    • Leading a staff of accounting professionals including in-house payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable and cost accounting
  • Experience with eCMS software a plus

Skills


  • Solid accounting expertise to govern and provide guidance to divisions (regional platforms) on accounting matters, including a solid understanding of corporate governance matters including U.S. GAAP and the ability to understand and adhere to IFRS accounting principles
  • Strong organizational leadership abilities with a willingness to “roll up sleeves to get the work done” and act as both a player and a coach
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced environment with a focus on results
  • Knowledgeable in accounting concepts, practices, processes, and procedures
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of Work in Progress (WIP) and revenue recognition in the construction industry
  • Knowledgeable with construction project documentation controls in relation to project set-up, change orders, and closeout within the accounting software
  • Excellent ability to manage tasks and conflicting priorities and deadlines
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities:


  • Provide executive level leadership in formulating the future direction and supporting tactical initiatives; monitoring and directing the implementation of strategic business plans; developing financial and tax strategies; managing capital requests and budgeting processes; and developing performance measures that support the company’s strategic direction.
  • Coordinate the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual reports, and perform regular financial analysis.
  • Organize and facilitate monthly Financial Reporting Package (FRP) process and meeting to ensure regular review of the company’s financial performance. Provide analysis and recommendations to the executive team.
  • Lead M&A activity, including pre-deal diligence and post-deal integration. Participating in the valuation, negotiation, and diligence for acquisition targets, helping leadership assess the viability of a robust acquisition pipeline. Integrating acquired companies into the existing finance platform, working to bring acquired companies onboard quickly and effectively.
  • Analyzes operations to evaluate performance of the company or its staff in meeting objectives or to determine strategic areas of potential cost reduction, program improvement, or policy change, acting as a change agent.
  • Support mergers and acquisitions.
  • Recognize patterns in historical financial trends, evaluate and report on potential risks, and recommend mitigation actions to protect the company.
  • Coordinate the development of annual budgets and forecasts.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, including cash flow, notes, ratios, and trend analysis.
  • Review and approval all adjusting Journal Entries to the accounting system.
  • Treasury management including daily cash audits and cash forecasting.
  • Manage and oversee CPA firm during year-end annual audit.
  • Oversee compliance of established internal controls and policies and collaborate with other company leaders with a goal of continuous improvement.
  • Oversee multi-state, multi-union payroll with occasional international complications, including prevailing wage, OCIP/CCIP reporting, certified payrolls, and multiple workers comp requirements.
  • Oversee the management of credit card transactions and postings within the accounting system.
  • Oversee monthly general ledger entries and account reviews and reconciliations.
  • Act as an active member of Ballard’s Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and attend quarterly and annual meetings.
  • Other relevant duties as required.
  • Manage all tax planning and compliance with all federal, state, and local requirements, including, property, sales, and other applicable taxes.
  • Manage fixed asset and non-capital asset acquisitions, maintenance, and disposal within the accounting system. Facilitate and monitor fixed asset revenue tracking and reporting
  • Manage and oversee the accurate and timely set up of new projects, timely entry of change orders and closing projects within the accounting system.
  • Oversee and review all month-end closing activities including general ledger accounts, balance sheet accounts, and overhead cost.
  • Recruit, interview and hire accounting staff as needed.
  • Lead and mentor the finance team members with the goal of developing and retaining an effective and efficient team of finance and accounting professionals.
