GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Chief of Academic Affairs is directly and collaboratively responsible for clinical educational activities at all educational levels, conducted at all MyMichigan Health System subsidiaries and facilities, including independent practices and facilities affiliated with the Health System, and leading the continued transformation of the Health System into a culture of education.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

(40%)* Development, management and oversight of the system Academic Office, including personnel and budget, and the clinical educational training conducted within the system, including strategy, planning, oversight and evaluation of clinical and educational experiences within the system.

(20%)* Promotion of the education strategy of the health system through monitoring and coordination of available system resources and alignment with learner needs, identifying opportunities for system participation. Identify and create new programs at all educational levels which meet the needs of learners, partner institutions and the health system.

(20%)* Training, development, support and recruitment of clinical educators; identifying or developing resources for ongoing support of educational activities in the system.

(20%)* Ongoing communication and liaison with internal and external stakeholders, including participation in relevant system committees to promote the educational mission, and bring about cultural transformation of the health system into a learning and teaching organization.


OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Institutional (Internal/System)

Establish and maintain central inventory/record of teaching activities system-wide and at each site, including faculty/instructors and clinical sites.

Liaison with internal system entities, such as site VPMAs and credentials committees, Central Verification Office, existing graduate medical education committees and Designated Institutional Officers, nursing education and CME offices.

Serve as the Designated Institutional Officer for system-sponsored programs (if no incumbent).

Further develop the system clinical education committee, which will provide multi-disciplinary oversight and guidance of educational activities.

Develop a program of evaluation to measure the quality of services provided to all stakeholders, and identify areas for improvement.

Institutional (External Partners)

Act as the focal point of contact for all partner institutions (existing and future).

Liaison with partner institutions and programs to ensure proper affiliation agreements, align system resources with institutional/program needs, and promote positive learning experiences for learners.

Assist clinical partners in meeting or exceeding accreditation standards (LCME, ACGME, CLER, etc).

Identify and ensure proper transfer to MyMichigan Health of any compensatory funding available for teaching activities (eg GME funding).

Learners

Act as the central access and contact point for current and potential learners within MyMichigan Health, including centralized receipt and vetting of applications (in collaboration with partnering institutions), in collaboration with the Workforce Development Office (HR) and with appropriate contacts at each subsidiary.

Maintain a current central registry of learners within MyMichigan Health system.

Monitor and maintain the quality of learner experience within the system; act as a resource and liaison for individual learner issues related to the learning environment (in collaboration with the learner's parent institution).

Identify and promote learning opportunities available for undergraduate and graduate clinical education; establish programs and policies for learners from non-affiliated institutions, as well as "exploration" opportunities in health care in conjunction with area and regional educational institutions.

Collaborate with physician recruitment and other system recruiting to provide information on career opportunities with MyMichigan Health and its subsidiaries to learners within the system.

Clinical educators (Faculty)

Develop and promote initiatives and encourage engagement to foster a culture of teaching and learning in the system.

Recruitment and retention of clinical educators and development of an educator pool, to include both employed and independent practitioners, including advanced practice providers.

Promote clinical educator training and development; monitor and maintain quality of teaching provided, including feedback to encourage improvement.

Create and administer educator incentives and recognition.

Provide support to clinical educators through learning resources and assistance with evaluation and learner challenges, in collaboration with partner institutions.

Program Support and Development

Existing program support and growth, in collaboration with partner institutions: identify program needs and system resources available; maintain current data on available clinical resources (educator and well as sites), and potential resources to accommodate increased clinical teaching.

Identify new program opportunities, in undergraduate and graduate medical education, as well as for advanced practice provider training (NP, PA, CRNA); evaluate opportunities for creation of new system-based residency program, or participation as an integrated site for existing program, or establishment of fellowship programs.

Encourage an atmosphere of inquiry for learners and clinical educations; support the system and its subsidiaries to engage in appropriate clinical research both stand-alone and in collaboration with external partners.


CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSURES:

PHYSICIAN - Doctor - DO or MD

Medical degree (MD or DO), and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Michigan; additional graduate degree (MPH, MHA, MBA, etc) desirable. Completion of training and current board certification in an ACGME or AOA accredited residency program

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

Doctorate Degree


EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

A minimum of five (5) years experience in medical education (including teaching), at the undergraduate or graduate level; knowledge of accreditation requirements, simulation services, educational support technology and applications, and educational and instruction techniques and theories.

Current, active or previous (within 5 years) direct patient care experience.

Current, active or previous involvement in practice or institutional management or decision making (eg. Administrative, department head, committee memberships, etc); effective team-oriented leadership and collaboration with direct staff and others.

Effective oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate with individuals and groups across disciplines; good conflict resolution skills.

Ability to work with and lead multi-disciplinary teams Data and computer management skills – familiarity with Microsoft Office and medical education management and reporting software.
