Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical, 15% Adult Basic Education, 3% Applied Bachelor degrees. Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw. Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English, and Continuing Education students. PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Instructional & Classroom Support Technician 1 works under the direction of the Instructional & Classroom Support Tech 4 and Instructional & Classroom Support Tech 3 employees. This position provides support requiring knowledge of chemistry including equipment, materials, techniques, and procedures. Position involves resetting lab experiments, assisting in the preparation of experiments, maintaining lab equipment, and assisting faculty. This position is required to abide by procedures and guidelines established by the college.
- Keep laboratories, stockroom, and storage areas clean and organized.
- Prepare chemicals and use safety procedures in handling hazardous materials and properly dispose of chemical waste.
- Set up equipment, materials, teaching aids and demonstrations in support of lab courses.
- Determine need for materials, equipment, and instruments necessary to support assigned lab course loads.
- Provide clean and organized labs and materials.
- Operate, maintain, and repair lab equipment and instrumentation.
- Wash laboratory glassware; common glassware, graduated cylinders, volumetric flasks, pipettes, and specialty organic glassware.
- Conduct and update inventories of equipment, supplies and chemicals.
- Organize and prioritize tasks to ensure they are accomplished and meet strict deadlines as set forth in syllabus/class schedule.
- Understand and follow applicable laws, regulations, and other standards to establish and/or maintain a safe work environment.
- Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to support student learning.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to prioritize tasks and projects, manage and organize supplies, and multi-task to assist others.
- Experience working with chemicals in a laboratory setting; handling chemicals and hazardous waste.
- Knowledge of safe laboratory practices, and maintenance and repair of equipment and instrumentation.
- Ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
- Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
- Ability to work on feet for an extended period.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate of Art’s degree with major study in a science related field or successful completion of college level coursework in chemistry or equivalent training or experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree with major study in a scientific related field
- Combination of training, formal education, and/or research or service laboratory operations experience
Beginning July 1, 2022, if a person has held a part-time hourly, or temporary position within an institution after July 1, 2022 they will not qualify for this position and cannot be considered further.
The provisions of WAC 357-04-045 requires:
a. The employee is employed twelve consecutive months or less;
b. The employee is employed for one thousand fifty hours (1050) or less in that same twelve consecutive month period which begins from the original date of hire or July 1, 2022, whichever is later; and
c. The employee is limited to one appointment only with the same higher education employer that meets the criteria in (a) and (b) of this subsection.
