Summary:

The College of Agricultural, life and Natural Sciences (CALNS) Civil Rights Compliance Coordinator is responsible for monitoring the overall implementation of state and federal civil rights requirements. The major responsibility is to prevent discrimination and discriminatory

harassment of students, faculty, staff and others on the basis of sex, race, creed, religion, color, national origin, veteran or military status, sexual orientation, gender expression or identity, disability, and the use of a trained dog guide or service animal by a person with a disability. For issues regarding sex and disability discrimination, the CALNS Civil Rights Compliance Coordinator will coordinate with the AAMU's Title IX and Section 504 Coordinators, respectively.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

As a direct report of the Dean/1890 Research Director, the Civil Rights Compliance Coordinator has principal responsibility to facilitate the implementation of the AAMU Research Experiment Station's policies and procedures related to discrimination and discriminatory harassment, and ensure that they are applied consistently across CALNS departments. Respond to CALNS students, parents, faculty, staff, administrators, and others who report suspicion of civil rights violations, discrimination, or harassment.


Job Requirements:


Minimum Position Requirements (including certifications, licenses, etc.):

  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree in relevant discipline is required, with at least 1-2 years of experience.
  • Successful administrative experience in a university, industry, government or legal environment with knowledge of federal and state civil rights laws and regulations.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effectively perform case intake, accurately document, investigate, oversee and resolve cases of discrimination.
  • Experience in file management and record building, as well as able to produce statistical case count information, as needed.
  • Able to serve as liaison during active case resolution. Collaborate with Human Resources in organizing sensitivity trainings, forums, events relating to civil rights and anti-discrimination practices.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of current civil rights laws, regulations, and guidelines, including Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Presidential Executive Order 12898 addressing environmental justice in minority and low-income populations, Presidential Executive Order 131166 addressing services to those individuals with limited English Proficiency (LEP), the rights of women, the elderly, and disabled as protected under related statutes, as well as rules and guidelines adopted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Office for Civil Rights (OCR),
  • Become familiar with resources and information available from USDA-NIFA's Equity and Civil Rights Office, and request technical assistance when needed, attend trainings for civil rights compliance coordinators and/or on civil rights issues generally, such as those offered by USDA-NIFA's Equity and Civil Rights Office, and share information with CALNS Research/Experiment Station administrators and staff.
  • Strong communication and advocacy skills, equally effective with both internal and external constituents.
  • Thoughtful risk-taking which relies on data and input from others to foresee possible threats or unintended consequences from decisions.

The salary for each position is based on the grade/tier in which the position is placed, and the salary within the grade/tier is based on the number of years of related experience or number of years in the hiring rank.
