Ability to establish and maintain a strong working relationship with bus drivers, students, school personnel, and others. Ability to recognize students’ medical problems and take appropriate action to meet students’ needs. Ability to perform emergency first aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Ability to deal with student behavior problems. Ability to recognize and report malfunctioning equipment. Ability to communicate effectively with others. Ability to submit accurate and complete written reports. Ability to operate wheelchair /passenger safety restraint systems and hydraulic wheelchair lifts. Ability to operate a two-way radio.
Completion of Prince William County Schools Division school bus attendant training requirements.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Understands and complies with conditions of published regulations, written departmental operating procedures and supervisors’ oral instructions. Administer first aid and/or Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) when required.
Assist students to board and exit the bus as necessary during normal bus operations and during emergency bus evacuations. Secure students for transport using passenger safety restraint systems when students’ needs require the use of such systems. Operate special equipment, such as two-way radio, wheelchair lifts, assistance devices and wheelchair safety restraint systems. Conduct routine inspection of the wheelchair and passenger safety restraint systems for proper operation and report needed repairs to supervisory personnel. Complete Student Discipline Referral form when disciplinary problems occur on the school bus and coordinate the submission of the form through the bus driver to the school principal or designated school administrator. Submit complete and accurate weekly reports as required by departmental policies and procedures. Perform other duties as assigned.
An essential function of this position is the ability to work in person and physically report for work at the school.
BASIC FUNCTION: The school bus attendant assists the bus driver in providing safe transportation for special education and disabled students to and from their assigned schools and their assigned pick up and drop off locations. Work includes providing for the special needs of disabled and special education students, assisting disabled students on and off the bus, and securing students in wheelchair and passenger safety restraints systems. The bus attendant complies with school division written instructions and state and federal laws. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and must be able to smell smoke, fuel and other odors. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must have sufficient strength and agility to move, lift and secure students weighing up to 50 pounds in passenger safety restraint systems and with assistance move, lift and secure students weighing 50 to 100 pounds. In addition, the employee must be able to reenter the bus emergency door to assist students off the bus in emergency situations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid and cold/hot weather conditions. In addition, the employee may be exposed to airborne particles as well as minor vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
