Permanent Fisheries Employment Opportunity
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has an immediate opening for a permanent Biological Science Assistant to join the Charleston office located in Charleston, Oregon.
The purpose of the position is to monitor recreational and commercial shellfish fisheries, collect samples, assist with research and data analysis, and provide outreach services for multiple shellfish fisheries. Work includes collecting, tabulating, and analyzing data on shellfish fisheries, shellfish resources, and marine/estuarine habitats. The position requires frequent contact with shellfish fishery participants as well as the general public while collecting samples and data.
What you will do:
The primary purpose of this position is to conduct recreational and commercial shellfish sampling activities along the southern Oregon coast (primarily in the region of Coos Bay, Bandon, and Port Orford), to assist with data analysis and preparation of technical reports, and to provide education and outreach services about shellfish for the general public. Specific responsibilities include collecting, tabulating, and analyzing logbook records and creel survey data on recreational and commercial shellfish harvest activities, compilation of technical information about shellfish populations and resources, and assembly of information about marine/estuarine habitats. The person in this position will have frequent contact with a diverse group of stakeholders and participants in shellfisheries, as well as the general public while sampling and collecting data. Job duties include answering questions about shellfish regulations and helping with public contact/reception in the field and at the ODFW office in Charleston. The person in this position also provides technical assistance to the ODFW Shellfish Program during ongoing research projects, stock assessments, population surveys, and other activities associated with shellfish.
The person in this position is expected to learn proper identification of common marine and estuarine shellfish, including bay clams, razor clams, mussels, abalone, crab, shrimp, sea stars, sea urchins, and other groups. The position requires accurate, effective, and courteous communication with recreational and commercial shellfish harvesters and the general public. In addition, the position also includes generation of data and ancillary information from creel survey interviews, keyboard entry of data into multiple databases, and the collection and processing of biological samples. Other duties include periodic trailering, launching, and operation of a small boat (and outboard motor) to conduct surveys and field work in the bays and estuaries.

Working Conditions:

Work includes both indoor and outdoor activities.

Indoor activities include work at a computer workstation for data entry, organization of data files, correspondence, information synthesis, and preparation/processing of samples.

Outdoor activities include frequent trips to docks and shellfish harvest locations at irregular hours in all kinds of weather. Sampling is conducted regularly by walking on docks, along the shorelines of estuaries and beaches, in soft sediment tide flats, and from small boats in estuaries.

Occasional sampling is done in commercial fish processing plants around moving equipment such as forklifts; floors are usually wet and slippery.

Occasional work on small boats and commercial fishing boats in adverse weather and rough seas.

Must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather. Frequent use of a vehicle. This position requires a valid Oregon Boater Education card, a driver license, and an acceptable driving record.

This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.

This position requires a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board. There are some exceptions to this (e.g., Coast Guard Boat Operator License or commercial fishing license). For further information, access the Web site atwww.boatoregon.com. Applicants must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will check driving records for in-state finalists. Out-of state finalists will be required to present a current driving record for review.

Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible.
