Bid Manager Job at Thiess

We're seeking a Bid and Proposal Manager who will work across the Thiess North American region. This candidate will work on the Business Development team supporting Proposal Management, Client Relationship Building, and New Business Development.

PRIMARY PURPOSE

  • Direct proposal development for new mining services projects, from scoping and design to development of appropriate business plans.
  • The application of technical and operational knowledge to develop sound and accurate projects proposals by developing strategies, to solve challenges and optimize performance. Manage and coordinate internal, and external specialists, proposals, trade-off studies, tenders, and Thiess internal Governance Process, including approval submissions, tender handovers and client feedback for unsuccessful tenders.
  • Key participant in contracts negotiation.
  • Development of proposal value propositions, project delivery models and partner selections.
  • Support the growth of Thiess Americas through market research and direct contact with potential clients.
  • Contribute to the expansion of Thiess’ footprint through best practices and cost-effective outcomes for our Clients. Ability to analyze each mining operation as a system (regardless of complexity) and determine the critical value drivers and devise a strategy which maximizes return from both a Thiess and a Client (where possible) perspective. Ability to apply this analysis across the business concurrently.

Governance and Risk Management

  • Manage Salesforce approvals.
  • Identify and immediately act upon any areas of unacceptable exposure or risk to the business and its objectives.
  • Identify risks in tender and mitigate during tender process.

Tendering

  • Direct proposal development for new mining services projects, from scoping and design to development of appropriate business plans.
  • Coordination of internal and some external specialists and other stakeholders for proposal and tender processes.
  • Identify opportunities in tender and embed during tender process.
  • Manage clients' tender platforms and tendering processes, ensuring that all client requirements for tenders are met, and exceeded where possible.
  • Support the development of prospect value propositions, project delivery models and partner selections.
  • Update data and information for assigned Prospects in Salesforce periodically.
  • Report of status and progress of assigned Prospects.
  • Work with Business Development Manager to plan and prioritize Prospects and other Growth activities to ensure delivery of the Thiess Business Plan.
  • Understanding of commercial and legal contract conditions.
  • Work with mine planning engineers and estimators, to ensure that mine plan is optimized for the tender.
  • Analyze actual direct costs and overheads to aid in developing tender costs.
  • Analyze site production performance to determine parameters for use in budgets and tenders.
  • Lead in the development of accurate tenders that are practically oriented with due consideration of the scope of works and contractual obligations.

Stakeholder Management, Relationships and Communications

  • Build and maintain productive internal and external relationships to enable the development of successful proposal and tender submissions.
  • Clarify and be responsive to client and key stakeholder needs.
  • Proactively seek and deliver development and performance feedback.

CAPABILITY PROFILE

Formal Education

  • 4-year Engineering or Technical University Degree, experience may be considered in lieu
    • Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering discipline preferred

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 6 to 8 years of relevant experience in mining operations, field mining experience, with experience in development of projects from concept to contract execution.
    • Mining, Civil, Construction, Heavy earth moving, or Energy.
  • Demonstrated experience preferred in:
    • Mine operations / planning / estimating / forecasting.
    • Project development of mining services, proposal trade-off studies.

Technical Skills

  • Advanced skills in MS Office 365 software.
  • Intermediate skills in MS Project.
  • Good understanding of various mine planning software packages.
  • Good understanding of estimating software packages.
  • Good understanding of contract terms and conditions.
  • Basic accounting and finance knowledge.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE AND JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Written and oral communication skills
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite
  • Speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations
  • Listens and seeks confirmation of understanding
  • Effectively responds well to questions
  • Authorization to work lawfully in the USA without sponsorship from Thiess is required
  • Must be fluent in the English language
    • Fluent Spanish highly desirable

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Based out of the North American Business Unit in the greater Salt Lake City Utah area (Cottonwood Heights)
    • This is a hybrid role with a blend of home and office working opportunities, however, during a period of training and for other business needs there may be times when 100% office work is required.
    • A remote Western States U.S. position will be considered for the right candidate
  • Demonstrated experience working within the mining industry in North America, desirable to have some foreign or multinational experience.
  • Regional travel up to 50% required (USA, Canada)
